I've decided I'm going to keep pretty much anything worth more than a few bucks in a Whitman 2x2 plastic case, the snap-lock variety. I really want to keep my coins in 3 ring binders though. Does anyone know of a 3 hole vinyl pages that has pockets the 2x2's will fit in? I saw a page that was built to hold slabs but have not found a page built to hold the square plastic cases.
For coins worth not so much, what is wrong buying cardboard 2X2's, as long as you dust off the inside? Also, I read about paranoia about the staples, but buy a special stapler at any decent coin shop and you are set. Also, you have to have pretty poor aim if you staple the coin and not the cardboard.
Yes, that is a good site, thank you for linking it. However, it just seems like nobody makes what I'm looking for. Like the lighthouse slab pages, but for 2x2s. http://www.jpscorner.com/Eagle_Slab_Certified_Coin_Proof_Mint_Set_Albums.htm#Slab_Albums
Oh good god...every dealer I have ever known has coins in these things. Here's a link to a site that sells them. id just did a little deeper and find a company you can trust. http://www.jakesmp.com/CSD_Vinyl_pages/CSD_Vinyl_pages_001_M.html
Those pages are Vinyl. I may not mater to some, but evenif i have coins in some kind of 2x2, either cardboard or plastic, most are not completely airtight, and the gasses from the vinyl will get to the coins. i would stay away from vinyl at all cost! and in any useage!
Oh gezzzz...is it the gases from PVC which is the problem or the direct contact of coins on that material that is the issue. On another note. you can get these pages in non vinyal material that work exactly the same way. I wouldnt dismiss them so fast.
yes, it is the gases. I cant recall off hand the name or type, but i think i included it in my other post.... either way.. it is the gases that are very corrosive, and will littreraly eat your coins. It wont happen over night, so from what i am told, very short term stoarge is ok. but even still ... i wouldnt use them even over night - but im paronoid
also... dont get me wrong.. i am NOT dismissing the pages! I think the idea behind the pages to be an awsome one! its only the vinyl that is to stay away from not the pages.
There is a few other coin supply companies that are usually mentioned on this forum but I just can't remember them. I wonder if a search here would produce other names?
Found the one I've heard about many times. http://www.brent-krueger.com/?source=google I've never purchased anything from them but I've been hearing thier name mentioned for a long time as a reputable dealer of coin supplies.
Brent-Krueger is a well known supply store. but i have never purchased from them either. just keep in kind, whether a purchase is from Brent-Krueger, Jakesmp, or any other supply store... they ALL sell materials that are known to be bad for your coins and paper money. The only reason i can think of as to why they would sell a product they know will harm your items is money. and they are in business to make it. And as long as people buy these products, they will sell them.
OMFG...I got to find an alternative..PDQ. I got all my coins in 2 x 2's..except proofs and other encased coins..and they are all placed in softened coin pages. I need to nail down the pages that do not smell like a shower curtain, which is PVC. I know they got them, as a dealer in New York State had his inventory in them. Any leads would be much appreciated.
most hobby supply stores will have what you need. If the product doesnt say exactly what material the item is amde form, either ask, or move on. Just take a look at the link in my sig. I list all the materials to look for, as wells as some brands. as for places to buy them... im sure your favorite shopping site already has them
Daggarjon, I left all my collection back in Portugal. Most coins are worthless, but some are quite valuable (between 50 and 150$). My problem is that I've never been aware of the pages chemical composition or even that it mattered. I never heard someone mention PVC and numismatics in the same sentence until I came to CT, basically. I never noticed new corrosion, but maybe it's because I wasn't looking for it. How can I find out if some of the pages (bought them over the years from several sources) are made of PVC? How can I know if some possible damage to the coins might be from that? Is PVC bad on silver? I should probably throw them all away and buy new stuff, but some of these coins have been stored for almost 10 years
Well, I can help you if they contain PVC. If it smells like a cheap shower curtain you would get at Walmart...then its PVC laced.
lol although not a very accurate test, but a nice description Louis, click the link in my sig. I posted a super detailed thread about alot of this. In that thread, it mentions a test that you can do, called something like the 'berstein' test or somethign similar (if you do a search for 'oddy' in that thread you should find the link since both links were placed side by side) If you read up on the test, there is a real easy way to determine what material the item is made from. as for corrosion from the pvc onto your coins... the easiest way to tell is with a green goo that eats your coin. I cant describe very good it to you, as i dont have any coins that have been afflicted by PVC (thank goodness!!) Maybe some other memebers who know more about it can share how to spot it ect. A good person to check with might be ArizonaJack. He deals alot in copper cents, and might have a tip or two about PVC damage like detecting it early ect. There is also a member on this forum who invented a product to help rid the coin of the PVC goo. was it budgood.... i really wish my memory was better lol
