My friends say it is an Bad Addiction... :secret: My family says it is a Sick Obsession..:crying:... I think it is a passion....:headbang: ok -truth be told---all of the above.... A Hobby that can be both rewarding and relaxing..what do you all think???? A HOBBY OF THE KINGS!!! :thumb: Tell us in the forum what you think??? :hammer: (don't be shy - give an opinion) :hammer:
Most of my friends don't have the disposable income to have a hobby like coin collecting, so they don't understand why someone would collect money instead of spending it. Fortunatelly, my best friend IS a fellow coin collector and manages a coin shop, so I do have some common ground with at least one other person I know. As far as family, the only ones that collected coins are my grandparents, and they are both gone now. My wife and kids like money....but they like to spend it, not collect it. But, they're good about supporting my hobby. In fact my wife just took me to a coin show I didn't even know about last weekend, and let me buy some coins. That suprised me. Guy~
To me it is just a fun hobby. No great opinion. The closest to a collector is my father, but he is only obsessed with high grade morgans.
:goofer: :rolling: :goofer: :rolling:Wife thinks I'm Crazy and I spend to much money :goofer: :rolling: :goofer: :rolling: She is RIGHT!!!!!!!! Oh well off to the Historic Coinage site then to Mesa Coin, I NEED THAT COIN, the last one I promise Sweety Kiss
I love this hobby. It is not just an obsession, its a very educational and relaxing obsession. None of my friends know i collect. Except for my best friend, I showed him my Morgans and it was cool that he was studying them so closely and was so interested in them. My dad has a small collection from when he collected as a kid; some nearly completed Lincoln cent folders and some silver rosies and stuff like that. He supports me in this hobby, he thinks its cool and that I should go to coin shops and shows. My mom doesnt think its cool or uncool, she doesnt seem to care. My sister thinks I'm a nerd; which I am to some extent. My grandma recently found out that I collect and gave me some Morgans and a peace. An amazing hobby none the less
Whenever my girlfriend complains about all the time and money I spend on coin collecting, I just ask her if she'd like me to quit collecting and pick up a new hobby like drinking or gambling... That usually shuts her up.
It's actually, play money(US dollars) for something thats really worth something(gold and silver). Plus like someone said its educational, and you don't just learn about coins, but you get to learn about the history of our great country. For instance a few months ago I didn't know that John Quincy Adams was the 6th pres. I always thought he was the second. Which is close because his father was. This coin collecting thing has opened up a hole new world to me.
Thats awesome tdubb...my twenty year old knows our history but my fifteen year old has no clue...unless it has to do with ps3....hahahhaha
Iresents thoses remarksabout dringking. I'm rightts here with my Maattinis and I cando myscoinsssto o. Hick, Hick. In reality at times this hobby is irritating and frustrating. For example not long ago I wanted a certain coin in a cetain grade. At many coin shows I constantly heard "Oh, that should be common and around here somewhere". Yet it took me two years to find one. Then too I open an Album and see an empty slot for a coin I could never, ever afford. For example my whitman album has a slot for the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel and no matter how many piles of Nickels I search, can't find one. One more thing is not being able to show off my collection. Where I live it isn't even smart to tell someone you have over $5 in your pocket. No unlocked doors around me either. Mentioning a coin collection is rather like saying please rob this house. On a brighter note though it sure is nice to sit down and open a completely filled Album and just look over all the coins.
Send a 1918 Liberty Nickel to a good carver like Bill Zack along with a request, and I'm sure you can get your 1913 Nickel in no time!
aslanmia.....but I am possitve the great top four will catch it..hahhaa just jokin' don't want to rub or offend anyone....
I collected as a kid, then forgot about the hobby. I recently inherited my father's collection and have come completely obsessed with it and with buying coins to fill the slots he was missing (even though I can't afford it). I'm joining a local coin club this week, and spending all my spare time with coins. A friend of mine has a arcade and he is letting me sort through all of his change. I sorted through $500 of quarters (filled my State Commemorative folder except an Alaska P), and glass fulls of dimes, nickels and pennys. I found a 53 silver dime, and a couple of error dimes (I'll post pictures later). And, I'm having an absolute blast doing it. I don't know what it is, but I LOVE this hobby. Now, my Dad also had a Dansco missing only 3 walking halves and we can't find it. It is making me just sick. He also had standing liberty Qs and Liberty had half Dansco albums that are also missing. I am going to tear that house apart to find those baby's.... Anyway, I found cointalk this morning and it will be a lot cheaper than trolling ebay (which I have been doing the past month feeding my coin addiction). Does the obsession ever subside?
How true,,,,,I once was with my wife at a flea market and bought a indian head cent book with 35 coins in the book....the 1909 place actually was a 1909 S ...what a find....another time at the market and a cashier did not want to take several fraklins from a customer...I gave hime five bucks and I got 4 franklins....happy hunting....CYA Neal
