Grade My 1878-S Morgan Dollar

All,
Looking through some Morgans this morning and I found one that looks pretty good. I do not know if it would be a MS-65, but it looks good. It has a couple of rim dings on the Obverse 4 o'clock. A little discoloring around 12 o'clock on the Reverse. It still has some good luster and very few overall problems. What do you guys think.

I think the first one has some wear on it and it is a nice BU 55, while I think the bottom one is an MS 63 - which is, FWIW, a very nice pick up of an affordable Morgan.

BTW, I should have said this in the original post. It is the same coin in all the pics. I just took a couple at a different angle to try and get the luster of the coin. Thanks for the info Rueben.

There's only 1 Morgan, or am I missing something?

 

Nice strike....San Francisco minted = well struck most times. Not sure on grade (my grading skills = poor) Very nice looking Morgan! That little bit of angle does show the luster a bit better! Will have to remember that....

You are right, Reueben thought with 4 pics it was 2 coins I think. You and I posted at the same time. What do you think about the grade. Talk to you later.

is that cse then I grade it at AU55. those are rub marks on the chest and hairline that is covered up in the second photograph.

 

I'm not sure, I think there just some frost breaks, the breast is going to look flat too just because it's the reverse of 78'.

 

I would say a nice MS-63, could be MS64 :thumb:

 

I don't see any sign of wear; I'd say 63 minimum, maybe 64.

 

I'd probably call this one MS64. I don't see any wear and the fields are pretty clean. Nice coin!

I'd have to say MS64 with a potential PL. (I came to this without looking at the previous posts, and based on some very nice picked MS64's in OLD PCGS slabs in my possession)

Very nice coin, with out seeing it in hand I would grade it a high end 63 with a possiblity of a 4.

I own 2 1878 Morgans and the breasts aren't flat but they are of a different design.

This is not an issue of flatness, in any event




I don't believe that this is just a frost break.

this is the reverse of my 1878 and it seems to have similar darkness so perhaps I'm wrong

With all of this in mind. Would anyone reccomend getting this graded by a TPG service. I do not want to waste a whole lot of money, but isn't better to have a certified coin for when you are dealing with these types of higher grade coins?

 

I might do it if I had a few extra bucks. These coins tend to go up in price.

1878's have the concave breast feathering.

Coin is a MS62/63 - I would like to say PL but I think the frost is a post mint addition

 

You have to remember, that there were 2 reverse designs with 7 tail feathers. One is the round breast (which also had the upper arrow slanted) and the other is the flat breast (which also had parallel upper arrow). The Philadelphia minted coins had both designs.

The 1878-S Morgan's only had the flat breast design (also called the 7TF 2nd reverse) which had some strike issues. I would say that this coin is very nicely struck as the problem areas for the reverse tends to be the eagle's legs and talons as well as the arrows.

I don't see any signs of wear on this coin and it is very nicely struck and clean. It is an excellent 1878-S IMHO.
