I'm a newbie, so i hope no one laughs at this question. I am currently soaking some 40's and 50's nickels in acetone, is it ok for pennies as well? They are all circulated, just some I've gotten in change. Thanks
Personally I see nothing wrong with it. I know others will have a fit. The way I see they are you coins do as you please. If you search on acetone you will see a variety of opinions about it. Probably should search on The Penny Lady - a better expert that I will ever be.
thanks mark, i have been looking at past posts acetone posts in the search area and found alot of different opinions.i guess its really up to me
WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Photo taken on 4-7-09 Photo taken on 4-11-09 These coins were all placed in a glass jar of Acetone and all together. On 4-11 they were removed, place on the same service as from the 4-7 time without rinsing and placed in approxiamtely the same places for comparison. Note not much difference.
Hi David. What are you trying to remove from the coins? Acetone is a great product if needed to remove organic matter from coins. Past that, why use it?
Acetone will do nothing for corrosion. It's great for PVC, tape, glue and other organics but not corrosion.
I have been using Isopropyl alcohol lately to remove dirt, oils, etc. Acetone is more messy, and seems less effective. Anyone, have opinions on that?
Depends on the coins of course. On valuable coins you shouldn't be experimenting anyway. If just normal coins, not much to loose since not much will happen to the coin anyway. Just make sure you rinse it with distilled water after.
