AJ's coin arrived in todays post. Man he ships 'em quick. One question to the community of 2 cent collectors. Since this is my first 2 center I noticed right away the orientation between obverse and reverse was a bit off.....no a lot off. That is to say that the traditional coin turn between obverse and reverse was off by say 90 degrees. Is that normal with these pieces?
Yes, some die rotation is common for these coins (and they fetch no premium as a result unless they are really, really rotated, and even then the premium is small, in my experience).
Thanks Leadfoot. I posted the question in a new thread. Wasn't sure if I'd get an answer here. I appreciate your input and the coin itself is a sweet one indeed.
What Leadfoot said. Really not uncommon in the series especially 1864LM but still cool. I have several with varying degrees or rotation. True until you get to 1872 MS VS PR. Proofs tend to go much lower than a nice MS 1872.
True, but only two of mine are MS. My 1864 LM is MS-64 BN. My 1866 is also MS-64 BN. My 1864 SM is XF-40. My 1872 is AU-50. Like I do with most of my collections, I go for XF/AU to keep the cost within my budget. I find those grades are a nice balance between quality and cost. I only go MS on the less expensive coins (with a couple of exceptions).
