I noticed a few weeks ago that one page on my type set was kind of hard to turn the page, when I looked close to the binding I noticed the outline of a coin in the paper near the binding! Sure enough my bust dime had slid between the paper and into the crack of the binding! I thought it was a one time fluke and maybe the coin was a little smaller or the hole wasn't made the right size, but then reviewing my IHC set I noticed the same thing but with 2 coins that were BU! They all fit tight in the hole and seem to be stuck in there well so I have no idea how they worked their way loose and got caught there. These are the dansco brown albums, maybe a problem with other albums too.
Wouldn't help, they are tight, and on the IHC set even with it tight there is still a considerable looseness in the pages because there are only 3 pages. But they slide in between the cardboard and the paper anyways so they would still disappear and get close to the binding, the only thing I think would fix it would be to glue the paper to the cardboard near the binding but then you have the problem of inserting a chemical agent in the album and maybe ruining the coins and the pages.
I only use Whitman Classic Albums and presently have over 100 of them. No problems like what you mentioned with those.
This also happens on the Whitman albums for Barber quarters, and only on the Barber quarters. Strange, but all of the others are fine.
The coins just don't like being confined. They want to be free. Haunted coins trying to get back to their master.
I also have several of those and no problems. I sometime suspect that regardless of the manufacturer, the age of the album may too have something to do with these problems. As I noted I have well over 100 Whitman Classic Albums and no such problems with any of them. And in some instances I abuse them possilbly to much. For example in some I've made them into several types of different coins which means constantly opening and closing and taking apart. Still no problems as the ones noted. I do have many problems with the edges of the pages coming loose from excessive opening though. One thing I've noticed about some, not all, of the slides is that some are curved, not flat. If the curved ones are placed in such a way that the in part of the curve is inward, the coins stay put regardless of the wear of the coin making it somewhat loose. Possilby if your coins move around in those slots you may want to check the slides and if curved, make sure the inner part of the curve is inward.
OK, so you have a set of coins in airtites in a box? just rattling around in no order? Or do you have some sort of a display set up? If so what do you do? I always just had airtites for some extras or singles that I wasn't including in a set.
only common circulated coins go in the folders and albums. not worth taking the risk with a "valuable" coin. my "valuable" stuff lives in 2x2's in cardboard boxes under the bed, next to the MP5
On an unrelated note could you PM me your address and work hours? I buy expensive keys slabbed for authentication and protection, but I like having the rest of the sets in a nice album, (IHC, mercs, Buffalos etc) I don't use folders except for my lower grade duplicate sets from upgrading. I like looking at a complete or near complete set, not a box of flips or loose coins in airtites, but that is just my preference.
The only time I had a similar problem with my Littleton album was when I accidentally knocked it off my desk. Doh!!!
i live at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC. i typically work into the evening hours and lately have been spending some time with my new puppy
