We've just come across this coin and would like some input. We poked around google, and have read a little. We've read that some of these coins had an "O" on them to indicate that they were minted in New Orleans, and this one does not. We've also found that there is quite a range in value, as far as what it could be worth, mainly to do with condition. We are not coin collectors, so we have no idea. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
This coin was harshly cleaned (wizzed) which is unfortunate because it looks like it has nice details otherwise. Most coin collectors would pass on this coin because of the scratches on both the front and the back. I'll let one of the regulars give you a price estimate. My guess (im pretty new and not really knowledable on this series) would be 15-50 in the present condition. But if it wasn't cleaned it would go for up to 800.
Ouch! Agreed, would have been a nice coin. Don't know what the value would be with the damage, most collectors would pass on it.
Thanks for sharing the photo of the coin. Unfortunately from what I can see, the coin's condition ( which has been cleaned - harshly) is of no significant value to collectors. It is a piece, that should you not want it as a keepsake, would make a nice gift to a young coin collectors group in your local area. I would very much like to hear " the rest of the story".......how you recently came by the coin. That might be an interesting story. Thanks for sharing
ouch is right. looks like someone had a little too much fun with a wire brush. i would also like to hear the story behind this coin, probably very interesting.
oh no, such a nice coin to be so harshly abused. What did the coin do to deserve that? It has very nice details and would have been a nice example of an early American quarter dollar. I guess that it might be worth 15-20 bucks at best. It would be a cheap hole filler. BTW, welcome to CT.
This is an excellent example of why we tell novice collectors "DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COINS". This was a very nice coin that was worth $150 - $200 or more before being harshly cleaned. Now it is worth only a few dollars to a collector looking to fill a hole. What a shame.
how did you determine the coin's condition prior to the new users admitting the process he used to cleaning the coin? I'd still like to hear the rest of the story. But I most assuredly do agree with you, about lessons learned. Tom.
Is that question directed to me? I simply looked past the scratches that were apparently caused by the harsh cleaning and figured the coin may have graded EF to AU before being cleaned. You are correct, though; there may have been scratches or other damage prior to being cleaned that could have lowered the grade. I simply made an assumption.
ok, thanks for clarifying. I have a similar feeling about the Pre-cleaning condition. I would have loved to have had an opportunity to see some before and after pics!
thats why I was asking for some back-round as to how the " came-by " the coin. where where was it found, etc.
I have to concur with everyone else-- that would apparently have been a heck of a nice coin if someone had left it alone. But someone really abused that coin to the point where it has only a fraction of the value it would have had otherwise. Ouch!
