I just spoke with one of heritage lot inspectors, and he guarantees me the coin is as described a FS. So..big money here.

Well, wouldn't you be able to make enough money sending the coin in for review. If review doesn't give it FS then you get the difference, and then buy a true FS coin?

elaborate on that scenario Noost, please. make money?

The problem is that I believe this coin meets FS standards used by PCGS, but it does not meet my standards or NGC's standards. If you send it in for review with PCGS, they will simply state that it is a FS coin. If you crossed to NGC, I don't think it would get even 5FS.

The coin has inherent value due to the Doubled Die and the incredible eye-appeal that goes along with oustanding MS67 surfaces regardless of the FS designation. This coin is worth about $2,000 in my eyes, but I think it will sell for much much more. I will put in my bid and hope.

correct I agree, thats what I was questioning , where the value is in re-submitting for verification. I guess to a greater degree, being in a PCGS slab, you may have less opposition to question the accuracy of the grading, but what's the price you pay for that?
If you bid good luck. I too was considering, but i'm backing off.

That is the problem with PCGS anything over 5FS is FS to them. Hard to tell by the picture if in fact it is 5FS although by the pic it is certainly close if not there, but close is not 5FS. I would be very supprised if it does not sell for well over $2K.
And as foundinrolls has said your most likely not going to see one this nice for awhile.

I guess that it never hurts to bid even if you think you are not going to win. Every once in a while I win one that I did not think I had a prayer to win.

It is not really this coin's fault. Another coin of greater beauty and value has struck me and I really want it. It is a coin that I have wanted for a very long time and have been patiently waiting for the right toned piece to hit the market. Unfortunately, it will wipe out my entire coin purchasing budget for the remainder of the year unless my luck at the poker tables changes drastically. You have already seen it in another thread, but if not, here it is.

well bud, you know how I feel about this piece! and what I previously stated about the investment potential of the Lafayette. This one is a no brainer for me. The best, if you bid or buy. Tom

PCGS MS65. The list price on this coin is just above Numismedia Retail of $10,530. However, Numismedia does not take into account the different die varieties when valuing these coins. This particular example is a Duvall 3-D variety which is the the most elusive of the 4 available. As stated before in another thread, the Duvall 4-E has a current population of 2.

The last two rainbow toned Duvall 3-D Lafayettes auctioned by Heritage brought over $13,000 each. My concern with this coin is the pull away toning on the obverse and a mark on Washington's cheek. I have asked the seller to submit the coin to the CAC for review. If the coin comes back with a sticker, I will buy the coin immediately. If it does not, I will have to see the coin in hand before I commit to buy it at the listed price.

I really hope it gets a sticker. I know this will stir up much controversy. It seems that any support for the CAC always does. However, this is exactly the reason that the CAC was created. At the very least, it is the publicly stated reason that Albanese gave. If the coin has a sticker, I can be confident that the coin is good for the assigned grade of MS65 assigned by PCGS, and can buy the coin sight unseen from only viewing a photo. The photo incidentally was taken by none other than Mark Goodman, so we know that it is an extremely high quality pic. There is a $5,500 difference between MS64 and MS65 for this coin. If the coin does not sticker, I will wait until I see the coin in hand and decide for myself what grade I think it deserves and act accordingly.

My bid was $2,000. I am out. I will discuss the Lafayette on that thread.

yes. I could not see bidding even close to what it is at right now, and it will probably go higher than we even imagined.

Good things come to those that wait. I want a doubled eye 1943-P Jefferson, but that one was just too highly priced. Luckily, there is one for sale in the upcoming Long Beach Sale. Tell me that this coin does not belong in my collection.

Hopefully, this coin will sell for a much more reasonable price.

There must have been a frenzy of late bidding on that . Remember , it is the highest graded 1943 DDO .

The Long Beach Lot , is a very nice specimen and I would suggest the hammer will sound at about $2,000.00

Wow, I just found this thread and read through it and I never thought that coin would bring that kind of money. I couldn't tell if it was FS based on the pics and it certainly was a beautiful coin...but I think you made the right choice with the Lafayette. :)
