Well guys..about a month ago I ran into 2 consecutive $5 Silver Certificate Star notes that are currently being graded...these are the scarce "narrow variety"......here is an example of the "wide variety" that I picked up recently at auction.....test your grading skills on this note and see if you are spot on or not!! Since I have the "narrow variety", I thought it would be fitting to have the wide as well..... Will let you know the grade when someone nails it...there may even be a small prize attached, not sure yet..but will decide as it moves along. Ihave looked closely at the note through a loop and well..there are no hidden flaws that I can see....can you? I only scanned the face...the reverse is even cleaner!! Make sure to click to enlarge the note you can see it well. Here is a enlarged version of the "wide area" 3 engraving marks at the tails end denotes wide...2 will denote narrow. As you can see the inside tail of the scrool work ends precisely on the 3rd mark from the left..."wide" RickieB
I'd almost give that a 70 as it looks nearly perfect, but it looks like there might be some small marks in the right margin so I'll bump it down to 68PPQ only because someone already said 69.
65 PPQ Knocked a few points off due to top margin, bottom serial and leaning A. Not sure on grading paper yet. Great pickups!
Another very fine looking note RickieB! My paper notes grading skills are not the best and it's very seldom that I get to see notes of this quality in person. So I'll say GEM 68. Lou
Gentlemen.... Just like you when I first saw this note I said this is a very high grade note! So I investigated and tried to understand why this note was only graded at Almost New 55....yes, you heard that right!! Almost New 55!! I paid $200 for this note and I will cut this out and resubmitt to have it done again!! I firmly think it deserves a higher grade as I can see nothing on this note when visually inspecting it to warrant the AN55 grade!! It is clean, no folds or bends, no spears and the margins are decent!! As for embossing..well it slabbed at the moment and that may be the cause..it is the only factor I can think of to warrant that grade! Grading is subjective as we all know....and I respect the thoughts of you all, therfore the reason why I bought this in the first place....yes it is nice that it fit's into the Silver Cert part of the small size notes and the fact it is a star is even better! But the most significant factor for me is the opinion or lack there of from an expert. To me it is worth the $30 to have it done again...LOL Can any of you blame me for that...LOL Regards to you all... RickieB
Whoah. Bummer. It's still nice. I wonder if it is because of the bit of jagged on the top and bottom cuts or the upper right corner? IDK much about grading paper...yet.
while i do agree the note looks better then a 55, i dont think it could go much higher then 64. I see spot in the left margain, a smudge to the top just above the 'C' in certificate and above the 'S' in silver just as it crosses into the margain, what looks like a small smudge smack on the series date, and while the margains doo look solid, the top and bttom edge look a wee bit jagged - almost like they were cut with a dull cutting tool. The note is very nice, and very sharp corners ... the makings of better then a 55! thsi si what PCGS says about a 55.... Where is the fold?or bend? wheres the bent corner? I see crisp everywhere. No i know scans can hide small imprefections ... but RickieB is no novice grader.. such items would easily be seen by you my friend certainly a contener for resubmital!
I am not sure Noost...but I am planning on finding out...LOL At minimum it is worth more than what I paid...it survived the auction and was not bought, just waiting to be re-graded! I will let you guy's know in 30-45 days. It will be cut out and sent in along with a few others. Regards, RickieB
Daggarjon... I agree with most of what you mentioned..the evidence is slight and my thoughts were a 63-64 as well. I suppose we will find out..LOL The reverse of this note is so striking what you are seeing near the date is coming through from the back! It is simply a brilliant pressed/printed note...I just do not understand why yet.. Wish me luck!! Thanks for taking a look! Regards, RickieB
Wow, I'm surprised it graded so low. I'm pretty new at grading notes, but it sure seemed like a high grade to me. Good luck with the resubmit Rickie!
