My latest acquisition is a coin that completes my NGC Registry Set of Jefferson War Nickels. The coin is a 1943/2-P PCGS MS65 5FS with a very light patina and excellent strike and luster. Although this coin now completes my set which is currently ranked 3rd in the NGC registry, I am not finished. My goal is to find a rainbow toned 1943/2-P in MS66 or MS67. Once I do, the set will be finished and this current coin will fall into my duplicate set which will now grab my full attention. Here is a photo of my new piece:

I am very proud of this set and feel a great sense of accomplishment. Believe it or not, this is the first set I have ever completed. I know that technically it is only a subset of the Jefferson series, but it is extremely competitive and not easy to break the top ten in this series. Here is a photo of the completed set along with TPG tags.

I have decided to list some of the statistics of my registry set.

    • Full Step Designation: 4 of 12 (33%) Both the 1943-S and 1944-D have a chance at 5FS upon resubmission
    • Star Designation: 5 of 12 (42%) Both the 1942-S and 1944-D have a great chance at * upon resubmission
    • T Designation: 2 of 12 (17%) An extinct designation and very rare.
    • MS67: 11 of 12 (92%) Only the overdate (1943/2-P) is MS65.
    • Bingham Pedigree: 2 of 12 (17%) The 1945-D & 1945-S, a fantastic pedigree if you have ever seen a Gregg Bingham owned coin. Gregg Bingham was a middle linebacker for the Houston Oilers for 12 seasons and was nicknamed "ironman" because he never missed a game.
    • Appalachian Hoard Pedigree: 3 of 12 (25%) The 1944-D, 1945-D, & 1945-D. The serial number 291240 is legendary in Jefferson War Nickel submissions. I only wish I owned more of them. Oh wait, I do.
    • 2330653 submission: 2 of 12 (17%) The 1944-S & 1945-P are from this submission. If these two coins are indicative of the quality and eye appeal of the rest of the coins in the submission, it is certainly a great heritage.
    • Label Error--Double designation: The 1945-D label shows the pedigree, star designation, and T designation. I have confirmed with NGC that this is a mistake and that any coin re-holdered will have the T designation removed and the star designation added if applicable. This may be the only NGC graded coin showing both the star and T designation. Some people actually do collect the plastic. Not a bad idea if this is the coin inside.
    • Most Expensive: 1944-P NGC MS67 5FS (18/0) Over $1,500
    • Cheapest: 1943-P NGC MS67 (1741/15) Less than $50
    • Best Toning: 1944-D This is what they mean when they say MONSTER toning. This coin is guaranteed a star designation upon review and has a chance at 5FS. I consider it the cornerstone of the collection.
    • Best Value: 1945-D The population of the 1945-P in MS67 is 357/2. Of the 357, only 7 coins have the star designation. I paid less than $500 for this stunning coin. It is the only coin that has more registry points (750) than it cost. My guess is that this is probably the most eye appealing MS67 1944-P in existence.
    • Average Price: The average price for each coin is $615.
As always, feel free to post your opinions and comments. Thanks for looking.

If you would like to see a close up of any coin, please let me know. I have full coin photos 1000x500 pixels and individual photos of obverse or reverse 700x700 pixels.

And if NGC ever decided to expand the war nickel set by adding the proof coin to the set, I will have a legitmate shot at first place with this coin.

Congrats Paul! A few weeks ago I just add two new war nickels to my UNC set. A nickel shouldn't look like that..... absolutely stunning!

    Congrats (you stinker) ;)

That means you've pushed me down at least one spot on the ratings.
I'm mostly MS-66 and in the process of upgrading to MS-67.
    My 43/2-P is also a MS-65.

    BTW, very nice set.
Since I'm doing the same thing I've got a good understanding about what it took you to get it that nice.

Amazing! Wow thanks for sharing the pics. I just started collecting Jeffersons. I have a long way to go and haven't even bought one War Nickel yet. I am not looking forward to the competition.

that is a very nice set. I love jeffs. Not just because of the ease of completion either, but they are a neat set to put together.

I'm still of the opinion that Jefferson nickels and Roosevelt dimes are undervalued.
The reason is that they are currently circulating coin and haven't had anything happen to really attract interest.
The Westward Journey nickels were the only thing and they didn't really create a rush.

Lincolns are about right to overvalued. Reasons:
    - Beginning collection
    - 100 years
    - Anniversary issues

Washington quarters are about right to overvalued. Reasons:
    - State quarters
    - Silver
    - Most are within budget

Kennedy halves are about right. Reasons:
    - Doesn't circulate
    - Curiosities

    Dollars are about right. Reasons:
    - Doesn't circulate
    - Curiosities

IMO get your older nickels and silver Roosevelts while you can.
One of these days they'll wake up.
Particularly look for Full Torch dimes. That's a relatively new designation AND there's probably a lot out there that go for regular prices.

    Basically, yes.
But somewhere there should be a more formal definition.
I couldn't find it with a quick Google search.

BTW, even with your 42 proof, how do you plan to catch up to "Bressler NGC Silver War Nickel Collection"?

It depends on how many points they assign the Proof Cameo coins. They are much more rare than the 1943/2-P and should get more points IMO. My proof has a population of 5/4. In my mind that is worth at least 2500 points. That gets me half way there and then I would need to upgrade my 1943/2-P to an MS67* or MS67 5FS to get close. I don't think I will ever catch Bressler for two reasons: First he has an almost insurmountable lead and secondly, it would not surprise me if the has a 1942 Proof CAMEO as well.
