Now that one I like. MS63-64 depending on the severity of the mark on the cheek. Really nice color on that one. Good pick up.

Very nice halo effect..I'd say definitely "MS", don't have enough visual information to really narrow it further..

Awesome coin! I'm gonna guess 63*, due to the cheek 'scratch' and rim ding (1 o'clock) on the obverse, the reverse makes me think 64* tho.

    I stab at it - 64*.

    Very nicely toned 1887 Morgan.

I think the marks on the cheek and those near the ear adversely effect this coin's visual appeal which is otherwise very nice.

IMHO I think professional graders would disagree on a grade for this coin. I think it will grade MS-63.

  9. Actually looking at the obverse pic closer, it looks like the photo has been played with (photoshopped) to hide marks on the cheek.

Notice how Blurry it is just in front of the ear area on her cheek.

    If so then, MS 63*

I think the blurring you see near the ear is luster. :)

Thanks for the comments. These were the sellers images. I've bought from this seller before, and had never been surprised; though his scans seem to diminish some of the hits. NGC gave it an MS-64 star.

  14. Its seen more and more on ebay, sellers hiding marks to make it look nicer thus giving false hope for an upgrade and getting higher bids.

I know what you are saying Scott, but that can't be the case here. The large mark on the cheek precludes this coin ever grading above MS64. Without seeing the severity of that hit in hand, I think it is very difficult to determine between MS63 & MS64 for this coin. But if NGC graded it MS64, I will accept that the photo makes it look worse than it really is.

If this guy really wanted higher bids, he should have taken a better photo that shows the color better. You and I both know this coin will look different than that photo.

Yes, I agree that this coin will look different in hand. The last two morgans, posted previously that I purchased from this seller look different as well. Not really better or worse, just different. I do think his scans can somewhat mute the flaws a little.

The big difference is when I post the photos that I take after I have received the coin. My photos seem to excentuate all of the flaws, and dull the color. Obviously I still have a lot to learn with coin photography, but if I were to grade these coins off of my photos, they'd look MS-61.... :p

I believe what you are seeing is JPG smoothing artifacts (specifically, they used a high level of compression). While it could be intentional, it's not like they used the clone tool (as it may appear to some).

I received the coin today, and WOW!! I have never seen a star morgan before, but now I understand what Lehigh was talking about. The luster is much more flashy in comparison to my other two, and the coin just freaking glows!! Also, as stated before, the coin looks nothing like the original image. I don't know if I can capture this in a photograph.

Nice coin....what causes the toning around the edge like that, instead of the whole coin being toned? I have an 1892 Columbian Expo commemorative with that kind of toning, not as colorful, but around the rim.

Let me guess, the colors on the coin are much more vibrant and when combined with incredible luster, the colors seem to explode off the coin. That is indeed what makes a star coin. You need both color and luster. As a matter of fact, I bet your crescent toned MS64* Morgan probably looks a lot like one of my crescent toned MS64* Morgans. That powder blue color is just amazing with the right luster. Mine has a bigger crescent with more magenta and violet, but yours has the always sought after emerald green. Hope you can get a good photo, here is the photo of mine in the holder for comparison.

Commidaddy, Johhny's coin is a bag toned Morgan Dollar. Morgans were stored in canvas bags in Bank Vaults for long periods of time. In this particular case, another coin rested between this coin and the canvas bag and only the toned crescent that you see on the coin was in contact with the toning source.
