I recently purchased three 1900-O Morgan dollars that show a progression of die cracking on the reverse. In the first coin, the die cracks are relatively thin around the top lettering, but they become more obvious and a little more extended in the other two coins. Since I am not a Morgan dollar expert, I would appreciate any informative comments about these coins.

    Very interesting.
It's not something that I would collect, but I certainly enjoy looking at them.

    Collector1966,

Nice coin and nice Die Cracks! Also, the Die Crack from the "E" through the top of the "S" in STATES may be big enough (width-wise) to qualify as a Die Break. If so, then you may have a known VAM! Also, could you post a pic of the Obverse as well?

Looks like a Vam-23C, but I could be wrong. To be honest, I wasn't going to sit down and look through all the possibilities. But, I will give you a great link where you can look up VAMS and compare to pics yourself, here: http://www.vamworld.com/1900-O+VAMs
    Hope this helps some.

There are 3 coins showing varying states of die cracking. Here are the three obverses, in, hopefully, the same order that the reverses are shown:

I agree with Coleguy, it looks like the 23-C. The first one I'm not sure if its strong enough, it needs to have that die chip on the S, also look for a crack that connects the I in (In God) to the Eagels wing. Btw very nice finds!

I think the first one has a die chip on the S, but it doesn't show up so well in the scan. All 3 coins have die cracks that run across the word STATES, but the cracking is weak on the first coin.

Also, it doesn't show up on the scans, but there is a nice crack that runs through the eagle's right wing and branches off to run through "In" in the last 2 coins.

I would say then you have 3 Vam 23Cs :thumb: (Also I checked all 3 have the O set high) Great pick ups! I think it's cool how they show progression of the die cracks.

    Thanks!

Cool! I bought these coins from a Japanese dealer who had a bunch of 1900-O's that may have come from an original roll. They were being offered for about $40-50 each, which was a bit pricey considering that another dealer was selling slabbed MS-63's for about the same price, but I just couldn't pass up the three coins that I found with the die cracks. It looks like these coins are going to remain a 3-piece set.

I really appreciate the effort that you and the other posters made to identify these coins for me :thumb:
