After all my complaining how expensive 1915-S's are, I finally found one that wasn't. Does nayone have any ideas why it went so cheap?
p.s. as for why it went so cheap -- that all depends on what you consider cheap and how the coin looks in-hand.
Let me rephrase "cheap". Considering the last 63RB went for $977 and I saw 2 63BN's both go for $600+ (just to be sure , that was $600+ each), I got it relatively cheap. It cost me <$300. I don't know the shipping yet.
What did you pay? I would absolutley love to own that coin. In fact, a lot of my later date red coins have been toning even though I go to extreme lengths to control the environment. Point is, I am becoming more fond of brown coins as I can get them cheaper and won't worry as much about them changing.
My only offering in this subject is that the coin probably sold for a low price because the carbon evident on both sides of this coin would generally preclude the piece from grading anything over MS63. Are the prices realized that you are using to gauge your purchase NGC graded coins, or PCGS graded coins? It definitely makes a difference, because it is a rather reliable mark that NGC generally grades Lincoln cents a point higher than PGCS...which is why in general terms NGC MS67RD cents from the 30s sell for the same price as PCGS MS66RD.
Very intelligent move on your part in my opinion. I have always been more fond of brown coins becaus their future is far more predictable. Not only that, but they are actually just as difficult and challenging to match up in a set as red coins.
Charles, You're a sharp dude, but do you really think that little amount of spotting (I see one spot on each side) will preclude a 64 grade at PCGS? I must say my experience is different. That said, I agree with your perspective on the difference in higher grade coins between PCGS and NGC, but they seem pretty even when it comes to the 62/63/64/65 grades, IMO. But this coin went for about half of 63 money, much less 64 money. Just wondering, as the above statement struck me as odd (for someone other than GDJMSP or Ruben )....Mike
Well my opinion of NGC (mind you I have very little experience to draw from- I have submitted about 15 coins ever, and have another 11 at PCGS now) is that they are pretty conservative lately. I sent 7 coins to PCGS and all came back graded very accurately IMHO. The NGC ones (several of them) seemed undergraded. NGC boards have several posts about this, and I personally think that CAC has resulted in a lot of downgrading by both of these TPG companies. Either, way RLM scored and it does seem the carbon spot on both sides are neglible.
Not sure about that. It may will be a scratch on the slab. Will have to wait until I get it. And thank you all!
Finally got the coin. I have no idea why Heritage took so long shipping it. Anyhow, that thing is hammered and virtually mark free. There are a couple minor ticks below the "AMERICA", but that is all I could find. However, it is very dark and not very lustrous. My guess is that it would be a 66/67, but they took off for color and luster. All-in-all, it may be an odd way to get there, but I think it really is a 64.
I just noticed how bad those pix were. Lets see if these are any better. They still did not catch all the beard and other details, but they seem to be the best I can get.
