So here is another that caught my eye today. Could this be a midnight minter mistake ? It seems that the "E" in AMERICA has been either filled in prefectly by grease or was it part of the hub breaking on the legend ? (doubtfull) I will say that there is a miniscule amount of detail from the "E" left & it almost has the impression of being double in the right light. Under 9X I dont see any tool marks ,lines or damage to make me believe that is was intentionally removed.
I figured grease filled die too. With the slight evidence of the "E" it really couldnt be much else. Thanks for the replies.
For most collectors, however, since the coin is 'impaired' from the way it 'should' look, they would likely want a discount. It's not really classifiable as an error, this sort of thing was common back then...and still is, for that matter. Basically it's a white elephant. It's a nice coin with a missing letter - some people would actually like that part of it, but most would prefer all the letters be on the coin.
I would like to see the dropped filling 'E' struck through on the next coin. That would be worth something surely.
Yeah personally I think id first want one with all the letters though I like how detailed the eagle is most ive seen look like a blob with no details.
