Today a customer came into the bank with 2 bags of coins to open a safe deposit box. He is a regular and SUPER nice. I didn't know that he collected coins though. Never would have guessed it. Well I mentioned collecting too and he got into the bags to show me. He had a bag of silver and a bag of gold. OMG The gold coins that he had were amazing! He said he bought $10,000 of gold coins this past weekend. I can only dream. Most of the coins I have never seen so couldn't tell you what they were. He did have some Franklin halfs and I mentioned that I've been searching and haven't found one yet and he handed me one and said "Here you go take this one" I told him that I couldn't take it. I proceeded to open a box for him and he kept showing me coins. Then he gave me a 1920 Walking Liberty. Pretty worn but such a nice gesture. He wouldn't take no for an answer anymore.

No real point to this message just thought I'd share that their are still some really nice people out there!

Well, that's very nice. I'm sure it will be a valued part of your collection because of the association. Collectors seem to be a pretty generous group of people, in general.

It will be. I value every coin I have actually but this is such a nice guy and for him to be so willing to show me his collection and sit and talk with me about his coins and to want to give me one is sweet.

Not any yet. I don't feel like getting up off the couch either. LOL I went to work this morning thinking I was getting off at 4 like I'm always supposed to but then one person had already planned to have the day off today then one of the closers called in so I had to stay till after 6. Add that on top of I got about a 15 minute break the whole day (I was at work 10.5 hours) we were very short handed so I worked my butt off and then on top of all of that I have a massive headache and OH did I mention the elderly customer that I watched fall on her head as she was coming into the bank today? I just remembering hollering Oh BLANK and running to the door hollering for our manager! I thought that she was dying in front of me. Scared me half to death. She was okay but apparently falls alot. She said she fell 3 times last week and she was DRIVING!

That and I come home to a hateful husband which is always the case! LIFE!

It is a 1920 and I believe it is a D mint. Like I said it's really worn and I'm sure not worth much monetarily. I was just impressed with the generousity of people. That was really the point of this thread. I'm trying to keep my happy mood going but it's hard sometimes. Especially hard when you're told everything is your fault. I'm just kinda tired.

    Kdkenn,
Great story. It is always nice to hear stories of kindness and generosity. I have often been on the receiving end of kindness (see my post on my latest bank find!) and it still surprises me. I'm sorry that you feel down with how things are going for you. Please try to keep your positive attitude and remember you are among friends here.

There are a lot of good people out there, you found one today. Collectors in general seem to be great people, anyone who deals with the public every day and keeps half way sane is also in the special people group. So enjoy your new coin and smile, tuesday is a new day.

I think us coin collectors are pretty generous. Over the weekend a family friend gave me a Morgan Silver, I couldnt accept it for free and gave her $25. It was her granddaughters birthday party, and I knew her son, who is only 4 would be upset that he didnt have anything to open. Well last week I bought three rolls of the new P mint lincoln pennies from a local bank. So I wrapped up a roll for him and took a plastic holder with me so he could see the coins and store all 50 of them in the plastic tube. He was so happy to get the coins. This ladies daughter is in her early 20s and just had her baby last year, and Tanya- the family friend and her husband just adopted little Justin a couple years ago. He is just starting in the world and Im getting him into coins. I think Im gonna get him an older, sharp Morgan to add back to his collection for his birthday along with the Presidential proof coins from 2007-2009 and get him the set each year thereafter. Xmas he is getting a 2007 Silver Proof Set (1st year with Presidential Dollars).

Sharing our hobby is a pretty common trait I believe. As I cleaned out 50+ years of stuff I ended up rolling a lot of Lincoln wheats. Nothing special, just average circulated that I put aside starting in the late 50's onward. These arn't worth much, dealers I spoke with at several shows wern't really interested at anything over face. So I started carrying a roll or two when I attended shows. I would find a young collector attending the show with a parent and give them a roll to search. To see the excitement in those kids faces is more than worth the fifty cents.

I believe anything we can do to spark interest in a new generation of collectors is time and effort well spent.
