Hello everyone, Today I put on my cotton gloves because my V75 Proof ASE had a little speck of something on it and I wanted to get it off. I held it by the rims but for some reason it left a bit of condensation around the edge where I was holding it. Even though I was wearing gloves. Basically it made the mirrored proof finish look cloudy. Is it possible that the heat from my hands is seeking through the cotton gloves? What causes this and how can I prevent it?
Do you have any Pics ? To see what your saying . How could that happen ? Were your hands oily or sweaty .
I didn’t take any pics because I wanted to get it back in the holder as quickly as possible after gently removing the tiny speck of whatever. My hands might have been a little sweaty but not overly sweaty. But I thought the whole purpose of gloves was to prevent sweat & oils from getting on a coin?
Yeah it was one of the V75 ASEs that came out not long ago. They come in capsules inside little US mint boxes like all other proof Silver Eagles. I had never taken it out of it’s capsule until today. The little speck of dust on it was bugging me. I was able to remove the condensation but I’m just wondering why it happened in the first place. Maybe next time I should wear two pairs of gloves?
I always wash my hands before handling a coin as I’m a smoker and don’t want nicotine to get on my coins. Someone once told me nicotine can cause toning.
The nicotine causes addiction.. The smoke causes toning to eveything in your home! Even the coins. It's called soot
I’m talking about nicotine on the fingers. If you have nicotine on your fingers and transfer it to the coins by touching it the coin will tone and become ugly.
I obtained a bunch of pennies from an estate a few years ago. They were all slimy, for lack of better words. I asked and was told the home owners were smokers, and as the drapes, walls, etc were nicotine stained the coins were slimy from it. Smoke lingers, dissipates in the air and infiltrates all over the place. The silver coins had, for lack of better words, a thin film of black sludge on them. Those cotton gloves probably are too porous and hand sweat/heat is transferring to the coin. Maybe get some higher quality gloves. I don't use cotton gloves at all but I don't take my coins out of their capsules very often except for maybe pictures.
Fell off the wagon, as it were? https://www.cointalk.com/threads/new-years-resolution.373479/#post-5410297
Most in this hobby don't wear gloves but I don't think the gloves caused condensation. How did you remove the dust from the coin?
I keep my coins in my safe with silica packs and I smoke outside whereas my safe is inside so I think they should be safe as long as I wash my hands before handling. Plus 95% of my coins are in NGC/PCGS slabs which sort of acts as a form of protection in the event somehow a tiny bit of smoke gets inside. Do you have any recommendations on good high quality gloves?
It was only a tiny tiny speck of dust so all I had to do was hold my coin by the rims and hold it beneath my room’s ceiling fan (without dropping it) and the speck blew off.
Yes. As you have already been told by others - DO NOT wear them ! No gloves of any kind when handling coins. The only thing you need to do is wash your hands first. Blake the recommendation to wear gloves when handling coins is an old, old recommendation, and a bad recommendation, that simply won't go away. And yeah, I know you can find hundreds of articles and books that recommend wearing gloves to handle coins. But the articles and books are WRONG ! In today's world people know better, they know that wearing gloves is a bad idea. It's just like the hundreds of articles and books out there that tell you you should clean your coins by wiping them down with a rag, or a toothbrush, or this or that or something else - they are all WRONG ! In today's world we know the proper way to clean coins because we have learned from the mistakes of the past. And wearing gloves is another one of those mistakes from the past that we have learned is a bad idea.
