I wasn't going to say anything....but that was me...I had a spare $5.5 mil sitting around and didn't know what to do with it. I saw this coin come up for auction and figured "why not??".

someone has deep pockets during these hard times 1 billion dollar mega million wasn't to long ago?the winner buying out all the rarest u.s coins he/she can get?

PS - I won all of zero dollars on my $4 spent on tickets.

 

When I was a kid, the 1804 Silver Dollar could be had for a mere $187,000.

What we see is a bifurcated market with the really top of the line stuff bring huge prices and a lot of collector material sagging.

Having said that, the prices in all of the Heritage Auctions seemed to be very strong. This was the first year I get shut out completely, and I hardly bid on American coins. My serious bids were on imperial Roman and hammered English pieces.

 

Totally agree....the prices for top-end Morgans and Saints and 1907 High Reliefs are flat or up or at worst down 5% from a few years ago.

The sandbox where I play is showing bigger losses.

Look at the shenanigans going on with shorted stocks and folks sitting at home. I wonder if we see some of those numbers and $$$ bleed into coins and currency at some point.

Actually, we've seen it already from the $500 and $1,000 bills purchased according to a currency publication.

beautiful coin, struck in the 1830s for special presentation sets to foreign dignitaries. Like the 1804 dollars.
