The colleconline website reports the theft of important gold coins. Apparently, the burglary took place on 21.01.2021 at the Museé de Douai. The coins can be seen here: https://www.colleconline.com/fr/col...ee-de-douai-monnaies-antiques-21-janvier-2021
Thank you Tejas for relaying the information. It is important that we all be vigilant. I hope that these coins do not end up melting down...
Very true. This is, however, a bit of a dilemma. By publicising the theft, we reduce the thieves' chances of reselling the coins and we increase the risk that they will be molten down.
I suffered a coin theft in 2003 in London. The BNTA put out an "Early Warning Report" to dealers and I recorded the coins with various institutions. However, that really came to nothing. I was lucky in the sense that I got some coins back shortly after the theft, when A couple offered the coins to a London coin dealer. The coin dealer was suspicious, kept the coins and informed the police. I got another group back almost exactly 10 years after the theft, when a person from Marocco tried to sell them in an auction in Paris. I noticed the coins and informed the auction house. The prospective seller agreed to hand them over to me. However, some of the coins are lost. Some are listed here: Collection of stolen vandal coins : Münzen (colleconline.com) Since the theft, I keep the bulk of my coins in a bank vault.
I wonder what type of security system they had that could be easily broken into, and the coins stolen without notification of Musee de Doual? I have my most valuable coins in a safe deposit box in the state credit union. I take inventory at least once a month. Those at home are in a deadlocked door, past my Australian Shepherd and behind things that could never be found. I guess we all have to determine how important it is to secure our collection. However, I feel for those that have lost some or all of their collection. Our collections have been obtained by studying and investigating coins of long periods of time. I know there is insurance, by the cost is sometimes prohibitive. Many of our coins cannot be replaced.
I have lots of coin at home and guess what? I have guns too so all thieves out there you are welcome to join a blood party in my house . I will make sure to have your mouth and stomach full with nice bullets so you won't need to steal for food anymore hahaha
There was nothing really special in that coll./ mostly common Celtic/ Western Roman/ bad quality too.
Well, I can see at least 6 Merovingian gold coins, including 3 excellent solidi. Further, I see solidi of Constantine III and Anthemius and a tremissis of Odovacer, all in excellent conditions. I must say there is a lot there that is worth having. But clearly, the greatest value of these coins is historical. They seem to represent single finds and hoards from the area and hence conveyed historical information of events reaching back 1500 to 2000 years.
There are still some exceptional coins. You must have an amazing collection if a superb solidus of Constantine III or Anthemius means nothing to you.
He does lol...tons of late Roman AV of the highest quality Also, I would add the the Constantine III and the Anthemius are the only Roman coins of significant value in this collection, the rest are relatively common. However, I don’t know anything about Celtic coins to determine their value.
Not sure if you people have noticed the Merovingian solidi, but they are pretty special in terms of both monetary value and historical significance.
Many museum thefts are "inside" jobs/ esp. in Countries run by corrupt governments. The theft of that ugly Canadian $Million Dollar 100 Kilo coin from a Berlin Museum/ you have to wonder/ trying to lug that out past guards/ security cameras. These coins above could have been carried out in ones pockets. We had a happy ending to a break & enter here. Some low life druggies broke into a Rockcliffe home, stole some "electronic gadgets".....missed a valuable coin collection Now I know that my MS Gallic War Stater is nothing special, there where 13 of them Merovingian coinage is much rarer. I have 5 AV coins/ one is unique.
I don't know anything about Merovingian coins. You can correct my description to add what makes it so special. You are the administrator of the group, you must be able to modify my records. By the way, if some people want to contribute with us to this stolen coins database project, we are ready to welcome volunteers.
I didn't realize that I could edit this. In short, the three solidi in the name of Anastasius are extremely rare and highest class Merovingian coins. They were probably minted during the reign of king Theuderic. These are the three stars of the collection, even the Constantine III and Anthemius pale in comparison.
Feel free to fix it if you have the time. You can do it in english, and I will translate it in french after. Thanks !
