i got my new coin microscope the other day and i was looking at some ms 70 coins from pcgs and ngc and i seen some coin marks in some places but they graded the coin a 70. i also sent five coins in for grading the other day to see what they will grade. on some coins i seen black type greese on them i guess it came off the dies they use. when grading the coin do they remove the greese or leave it on the coin. i had some coins that look very nice under 10x microscope but had a greese spot on it. these coins were fresh out of a new tube from mint. is there a way of removing the greese with out hruting the coin.
The TPGs don't grade coins under a microscope. They 'may' decide to use a 5x loupe at the most, but not necessarily. Most 70's are probably graded by eye only. If they examined coins under increasing magnification, nothing would ever grade as a 70 because there's going to be an imperfection eventually at some degree of magnification. It's just supposed to be a completely clean coin to the eye, mainly, with no noticeable hits, spots, scuffs, marks, etc. A best 'possible' example. Not necessarily a 'perfect' coin to a microscopic level from my understanding.
Xylene or acetone would remove grease from the coins. Use plastic coin tongs and glass or plastic cups. You really need to search the word "acetone" on this site to do it right or you will likely mess up the coin. MANY posts written on this. Just do the search. Good luck
Personally I would not try it - not even on bullion coins if that is what you have. That is just a personal opinion since I have never tried it. I do not recommend it, but others have had success. I would at least practise on some pocket change first.
coin............................................ ........the only REAL 70 coin would have a CAC sticker on it! (insert tongue in cheek)
Paul is going to be putting up a good exhibit with a write up on the MS 70 grade soon. I don't agree with the MS 70 grades, FWIW, but the theory is that they are perfect under no more than a 5x loup Ruben
Agreeeeeeeee. If your were discussing a F, VF, etc I would say maybe, give it a try. However, in your case, leave well enough alone. And put away that microscope. If you look at things in there all the time you'll never eat, drink, touch anything the rest of your life.
