Wanted - rattler morgans

I have only heard of PCGS.

 

I don't get on here much, so if it gets moved that's o.k.. I'm just trying to get the some help. I know how difficult it will be to find these. Probably impossible. The 1879-cc at the right time and under the right circumstances, I might be able to go to a higher grade. I have to try to find one first. But that to me is a big part of collecting. Finding something special. If it was as easy as collecting state quarters. What fun would that be ??? I hope to get to the Central Staes show in Ohio this month. What better way to spend a few days than to search dealer tables and try to find something you don't have.

 

It sure seems as if the OP is collecting slabs as much as the coins. To each his own, I suppose....Mike

 

Do the coins have to be slabbed? I just don't think VG's are worth slabbing.

But that's just me.

 

What does VG have to do with the op? He asked for VF and 2 MS-62's. Since he not only asked for a slab, but a specific slab, I definitely imagine that he wants them to be slabbed.

Rattlers aren't the only early TPG that is more upgradeable. Here are 3 ANACs from 1986-7 that I had graded ( no slab, just a photocertificate in B/W) and I sent into ICG this last year.




This 1934-S is interesting as Old ANACS didn't think it was cleaned, while
ICG did, but ICG graded it much higher.






I look for them at shows, but seldom see any.

Also when Teletrade was still in its touch tone phone bidding infancy, NCG graded many ( bulk deal I am sure) and put into a PVC flip with a grade label. I check these every so often as I will move them to a Non-PVC flip if any problem arises. But after about 20 years, I think most are past.

As said above, most commercially available coins have been cracked, those who have not are in tombs......

Unless you have an old time 20 year old collection in a shoebox at Grandmas house, the sharpies and " crackers" have already cracked the flippers and upgrades.

Thanks for all the responses. I just feel that the old rattler holders are an interesting part of numismatic history. I won't be cracking any of them out. My goal was just to see how many I could get over the next couple of decades. I agree that it is highly unlikely that you would ever get them all. I won't say impossible, just improbable.

 

They do look different then the ones that crawl around up here!

 

The 1879-CC Morgan Dollar is a rare coin in any grade. You will find it slabbed in just about every condition. The OP was asking about a VF which is $450 coin, but even in VG, it is a $150 coin.

Normally I would agree that VG's are not worth slabbing, in this case, I disagree.

My advice is to simply try to find an 1879-CC rattler. If you put a grade restriction in there, you search may be eternal. My guess is that there are only a handful in existence in all grades.

The OP has made it pretty clear that he is only going to collect rattler holder coins. Under those constraints, any 1879-CC he can find in a rattler holder will be an absolute rarity and he needs to be prepared to pounce when the opportunity presents itself.

This is not a traditional way to collect coins, but PCGS rattlers have a reputation for being conservatively graded, so theoretically he should be exposing himself to too much risk in this venture.

 

at this time i would disagree (few years ago yes) almost all the rattlers have already been maximized the only ones left are left are left for a reason. a conservative graded 1879 cc in a rattler, stranger things have happened but the odds are not in the OP's favor.

 

There are still some left in older collections which is probably the only hope this collector has of finding that 1879-CC. And just because the remaining rattlers are not crackout (upgrade) coins doesn't mean they are overgraded, just properly graded.

 

i would describe them as the maximum grade that the coin could hope to receive.

 

Only one way to settle this. Buy a whole bunch of rattlers and send em off to the CAC. If >50% sticker, I win.

 

You may or may not win but CAC will win and you'll have all those multicolored pretty stickers on 20 year old slabs...cooooool

 

You gotta admit though that the CAC sticker is one really attractive sticker. It is shaped like a football, cool font, changes colors, bright colors etc. As far as stickers go, almost unimprovable.
