When I was visiting my uncle today, I mentioned the NC note that I purchased earlier in the week. He immediately took off for his bedroom and returned with a $20 NC note that he got from a relative that died. Just curious if someone is able to and wanted to see how common this one is. I didn't have my camera and I couldn't the note home(he lives 2 hours away) but I did write down most of the details.
-1st National Bank of Saint John, Kansas

Both he and I would appreciate any info on it. Thanks in advance.

I have an answer for an old question of Klunky's.

The FNB of Saint John, Kansas (Stafford county) was chartered in 1886. There are 4 large sized notes and 13 small sized notes in the census of my 2006 reference. Total amount issued for all varieties was $528,060. In 1935, $50,000 had not yet been redeemed ($1710 of that amount were large sized notes). From the serial number, this is a type 1 note (the charter number is imprinted twice in black, and the serial number has both a prefix and a suffix letter), and was issued sometime between July, 1929 to May, 1933. For reference, type 2 notes have the charter number printed 4 times - twice in black and twice in brown, and the serial number has a prefix letter but no suffix letter. The serial number is the SHEET number, not an individual note number, so additional $20 notes were printed with the same serial number. The $20 type 1 note from this bank had 224 sheets printed, with the serial numbers ranging from 1 to 224.

In Fine condition, your note was listed at $200 (in 2006). Fine condition shows obvious signs of circulation, possibly having numerous folds and seldom retains much of its original body. It is not damaged or doctored. Value estimates change by about 25% for each full change in grade be it better or worse.

That's all I can tell you.

If memory serves, it was a nice VF.

Thanks a ton for the detailed answer. I have a Friedberg book and a couple others, so I know how to tell the difference between type 1 and type 2, but I was out of luck for all that specific info. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I'll be sure to tell my uncle about it. I've thought about buying Don C. Kelly's latest edition, but I don't know if I can justify the cost. I only have a handful of nationals and don't plan on adding a bunch anytime soon.

What do you mean 1 hit wonder? I've been a member since Jan 08 and I've made 58 posts. I might not post that much, but I check this website almost daily.

That makes sense now. No harm done. That part does stand out more than the number of posts.
