What should be included in a 21st Century Type set? With Lincolns should it be a pre2008, all 4 2009's or 8 if you consider zinc and copper, and a 2010 new reverse, plus any future changes? Jeffersons have their share of change thus far also. Quarters raise more questions. Well what does everyone think? Now would be a good time to think about setting aside proofs for such a set.
I think one example is fine. So, if I was doing a 21st century set...I would put a 2001-08 cent in the set and one of the 2009s. I don't think a type set needs all 4. I'd pick the one I like the most and go with it. The same for the quarters and the Presidential Dollar. But, there are as many ways to assemble a type set as their are collectors doing it...so whatever coins belong in your type set are the coins that belong there. :thumb:
the 21st century type set is soon going to be bigger than my 20th century type set in the sheer volume of types
The answer is relatively simple. A type set can be whatever you decide you want it to be. That's the nice thing about type sets. You get to make your own rules.
It probably already is. Since Jan 1 2001 2 cents 6 five cent 2 dimes 66 quarters 2 halves 11 dollars Total 89 coins so far not including commems or bullion coins and by the end of the year add another 7 cents, 10 quarters, and 3 dollars. That will bring it up to 109 types by the end of the year. And in the future we are still looking at at least another 100 quarters and 45 dollar coins. And that is all by the end of 2020.
That's the general ethic around here... feel free to include what you like ! It's your collection. You don't have to defend your decisions. Enjoy yourself. As for me personally, if I were to include a 2009 1c, that would mean I'm interested in the new reverse, since the obverse hasn't changed. For that reason, I would include all 4 reverses.
excellent point, conder! or you could consider types to themselves like the pres dollars as one type or even two, one with edge lettering, one without, etc.

(btw to 900fine My father was on board a B-26 that morning over Utah Beach. The 344th Bomb Group)
The real question is what will Dansco include in thier type set update..... I hope they put a slot for 1 of each nickel and penny commemorative in addition to any major changes but leave quarters and prez dollars to 1 example. I don't think they should do copper and zinc on the cents as the copper are only from mint set (maybe silver only I am not sure). I also think they should remove commemoratives and silver eagles as these are not circulation. They could then offer update pages for these the way they do the gold... That is my 4 cents. In addition, if they want to add a super album for all types with all commemoratives and all quarters and prexs dollars that would be pretty cool too, it would probably need to be at least 2 vols though....I would attack filling one.
I'm just past caring about any of the new stuff. It's depressing trying to keep a collection of modern coins current only to realize that you need a 40, 50, or even 100 extra coins to get the collection current. Thats why I decided except for rare occasions or single coins I found attractive I was done with post 1964 coins.
If I was to do this (and I may) I would consider the following list as the minimum: Thru end of 2009 1c Lincoln Memorial 1c Lincoln Bicentennial 5c Jefferson - pre Westward 5c Jefferson - 2004 5c Jefferson - 2005 5c Jefferson - post Westward 10c Roosevelt 25c 50 States 25c Territories 50c Kennedy $1 Sacagawea $1 Presidents $1 Native American That would be a total of 13 coins thru 2009. I put the Westward series nickels down twice as the 2004 has a different obverse than the 2005 which is different than 2006 -if the obverse of the 2005 was the same as the 2004 -or- the 2006 then I would just include the Westward series as a single type. I debated about whether or not to count States/Territories quarter as a single type or not. The obverses are the same, but since it is a different "program", I decided to classify them as two seperate types. So in 2010 when the Parks quarters are released, I used the same criteria to include them as a seperate type as well. The new reverse on the 2010 Lincoln cent will also be a new type as well. So barring any other changes, we will have 15 different types thru 2010. With the length of the planned programs - Presidents, Native Americans, Parks this number should stay pretty constant for the next decade or so.
Very logical, a manageable number of pieces and leaves options open for what ever else the mint (read politicans) might throw our way.
If I might add to dponsness' idea that I would have a pres dollar with motto (In God We Trust) on edge and with motto on obverse. Mostly because the seated liberty series has distinct types with motto on reverse and obverse and this would be consistent with that.
LOL I probably could be called the Capital King because of all the Capital holders I have purchased over the years. Started buying 2"x6" for my first type collection when I was in High School in the 1960's. Most were sold with the collections a couple of months ago. Yeah, they will probably have to create a new numbering system for that series.:smile btw borgovan will you be at the MSNS show in Dearborn?
Yep, I missed that one! I would concur with this as an additional type as it was a design change from the "original" other than the "subject matter" of the type due to a change in the legislation and thus a design change in the series other than the planned changes to the obverse of the coin. That would take the total to 14 thru 2009 and 16 thru 2010.
