Why do you say "probably more available" ? I.e,. why do you think so? (I'm just fishing for good news <g>) And does T1 mean "log cabin"?
Oh, I've seen the items on eBay. But I'm just wondering . . . do you just walk into a post office and ask the busy teller, "hey can I buy a stamp and put it on here, and then will you cancel it for me?" I can't help but think the teller will think I'm nuts, and say, "there are customers behind you, move along." But, hey, what do I know. Can someone set me straight on this?
I spoke to my old boss at the large bank I worked for yesterday. He contacted the armored carriers and they said no special boxes or rolls of the new pennies. They are going to be mixed in with the rest. I wonder where people on Ebay got their boxes. Also, my mother works for the same bank and has been getting lots of calls for rolls. Looks like I struck out with the mint last week when I waited to order and combine the rolls with the Braille. Better luck for the next 2009 cent release.
Think ahead. Buy your stamps before you jump in the car. Have the stamp on the roll when you get to the window. Ask for a hand stamp. I don't know when was the last time you were in a post office but they aren't busy. I can't imagine that the post office in the stix in Indiana would be any exception. It's not Christmas. In case you haven't heard, no body uses the US mail anymore so they are asking for a govt. bail out. They might even have to stop delivering mail on Tuesday to save money and avoid lay-offs. You are a customer and have rights like those behind you. Stand up for yourself and get your hand stamp. Let those in line behind you wait their turn. Don't be wimpy ...you are a paying customer. Chances are those behind you in line will have a hand full of rolls as well. ...hahahahahaha.
I live in Northern Va., work in DC. So, my daytime local Post office is the huge one just across from Union Station (my local one at home is the huge regional Merrifield, Va., branch). Well . . . that's my question? What right do I have for a cancellation stamp? (For free, I presume). It's not like I'm sending it out in the mail, so why should they cancel it for me? Sorry if I sound obtuse. I'm not. I'm just ignorant here.
Even if you could get a roll stamped what would it accomplish? The ones on eBay are from Lincoln's birthplace. That is the collectible; not other post offices.
The first 09's aren't "gone". According to Coin World, the Fed ordered over 200 million of them, so there will be that many floating around somewhere. Probably not anytime soon. But at least they aren't holed up in some collector's closet. Guy~
I hered alot of them went to texas & so.cal http://http://coins.about.com/b/2009/03/31/lincoln-is-a-sell-out.htm?nl=1
OK ..baby step here. You first started out by mapping the route to Indiana to attend the event. Then you complained that it would be to expensive. I suggested that you get a few rolls postmarked so that you could defer some of your out of pocket expenses. This has nothing to do with Union station or Merifield. You would get the post mark of the first day release in the podunk city in Indiana. So ..after you go through the line and get your $20-30 worth of cents, you go to the PO. I'm guessing that there might even be a portable PO table set up at the event just for the purpose of hand canceling rolls. I've heard that happening at the release site of the Ocean in view nickels in Oregon. I've never had a roll stamped myself nor been to a coin release ceremony. I'm hoping that next May 14 will be my first. It sounds like fun and sure ..for a couple hundred bucks in gas money it will be expensive but life is meant to be lived. GO out and experience it. good luck to you. PS no the hand cancellations aren't free. I've had post cards stamped with first day cancelations and it cost the current postage rate.
Because I think they will be hoarded and not circulated to an even greater extent than the 1968-S cents were.
I'm thinking ahead. *If* the fourth coin is released in DC, I can probably attend, and then walk to the DC post office, get them stamped that day, sell them on eBay (if some folks are still into that), and use the profit to help pay for my "real" coin collection.
I think we have just witnessed the birth of a flipper. Welcome to the dark side little one.... give in to the force.
!!!!!!!!!! T1 post a pic!!!!! I would have thought by now 2009 cents would be commonplace yet they are not.
Well . . . if I see folks on eBay purchasing Type-3 rolls stamped at prices like $40 a roll . . . well, then, I'll just see myself as someone that's helping to supply that demand when they get to Type-4!
I found my first one in circulation today in Cape Girardeau, MO - strange thing tho - it was a Philadelphia and not a Denver. Normally it takes a LONG time for any Philadelphia coins to make it this far.
