Hello everyone. I just had to share. I've been working on my 7070 type set. You could say I've been working on it for more than 15 years now. One big hole I've had, and a coin I dreamed about owning since I was a small boy, was the old Trade Dollar. I've been looking and looking for one for years. They can be so darn expensive when they are in decent condition. I also didn't want one with any of the chop marks on it. I happened to come across this beauty and I just couldn't resist. The details have to be XF or better. Sadly, it was a holed coin at one time. Seems like it was repaired pretty nicely. Not too badly noticeable. I'm not going to, but I imagine if I were to have it graded, it would probably come back as Details - Damaged - XF. What do you guys think? I love it, and I know that really is all that matters. It's already in the 7070 and it fits perfect! 1877 S Trade Dollar - Obverse by BostonCoins posted Jan 26, 2021 at 8:14 AM 1877 S Trade Dollar by BostonCoins posted Jan 26, 2021 at 8:14 AM
Nice coin. Usually I agree with potty, but last time we were wrong . Anyways , love it. Barely notice the patch job. Like my mother use to say "no one going by on the train will notice ". Congratulations ! Just joking potty .
I have also been looking for a nice trade dollar, however I prefer mine to be circulated with many chop marks showing it did its job in circulating to other lands.
Very nice indeed. Whom ever did the repair did a great job. I too agree with Jersey Magic Man, a bit of wear and tare make it more authentic looking, just a second opinion. Thanks for posting your achievement coin.
I only have one, but it's slabbed, so I still need another one for my 7070 album. I differ with you on one point, though; I love chop marks, because of the history behind them.
Thank you! If you look to the side of Liberty's knee, you'll see a rectangle type of shape. That is the repair. Maybe it was a square nail or something?
I think they used to nail coins above doors, sometimes inside the wall, for good luck. That might explain a square nail hole, if that's what it is. (Just based on anecdotes on other coin forums).
It has its problems but it's an artifact, as shown by the repaired hole. Maybe it was nailed up over a saloon bar for good luck, who knows? I'm glad you love it and found a place for it in your album. I'm a big fan of trade dollars and have over 40 of them, they can be sort of addictive!
thats a really nice coin, i cant see the repair. someone help me out? its like trying to find that needle...someone get the guys name who repaired this coin. all kidding aside, congrads on finally getting your coin, enjoy man
Thanks @mike estes . The repair is by Liberty's knee. If you look closely, you can see it's like a trapezoid shaped discoloration. Whomever did the repair did an amazing job. Even in hand, the repair is not obvious unless you really look closely.
