JimM, I got there 30 min early and was gone by 11:30 or so. I like getting there early, less people to have to shuffle around.

    Jim,

This is really weird. I saw your latest posts before I saw the first ones. That's why I claimed not to have remember you. Now that I see everything in order, I must sound like an idiot. Of course I remember you. You spent about an hour at my table. I don't feel like re-typing the same gushy stuff I put in the last two posts, but suffice it to say that I really enjoyed meeting you, and I appreciate the information you gave me on the Bust half dollar references.

I hope to run into you again someday. I found you to be very friendly and knowledgeable.

I'm sorry I didn't have more to offer you in the way of bust halves. I usually have a couple of meek ones in stock, but I don't trust myself with them enough yet to get better ones. Someday.

    Anyway, thanks for visiting!

    Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

I not only have to re-type the same thing 3 times, but now it's a new topic instead of a response to my topic on first time dealing?

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to copy this whole post over there. Dangit.

Congrats on getting the 1st show under the belt. You'll sleep better the night before the next one, lol. They get easier and easier as you go. You'll always pick up hints and add to your pre-show to do list as you get used to it.

Welcome to the world of coin show dealing and websites, you'll ease right in, I did. It is a blast. Even a bad day at a coin show is better than a good day working, anyday;)

Hey, sometimes the same person starts 2 or 3 similar threads and I end up having to scroll through all to see if I have responded already. I get "Thread tag".:headbang: I am sure others suffer from this also. It is not dementia:whistle:

    Thanks for the encouragement, Jack.

I have a sign on a wall at my office (totally inappropriate) that says "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at the office."

I couldn't agree more. And it truly does apply to coins, too. I had a blast today.

Same with my show except my table fees are more.

We start very early I get there about 6am and there is activity by 8:00.
Same with crowd turn out busy from 8 to about 1 then dead and always worse in summer. We tend to have our best shows in fall and winter.
Even though my show has been held monthly for over 25 years there is so much competition for outdoor activities in warm weather and we have warm weather for up to 9 months of the year.

It was a good show. Every dealer that I talked to did well. One stated its probably the best so far this year for him. I know it was pretty busy, I had one dealer that I know ask me to give him a hand for a bit because he was so busy.

I did get to see ALOT of Jefferson nickles. One dealer purchased 9 rolls of 1950D BU from one gentleman and the guy said he had a few more, total of 42 rolls! Can you imagine having 42 rolls of BU 1950D Jeffersons sitting in the closet. WOW.. He had BU rolls of the 1939D as well, I think they were purchased for a tad over 2 grand a piece.

Anyway it was nice meeting you Borg, I am sure that we will meet again. I go to most every show in SE Michigan. I like spending my kids inheritance money. : )

And Yes Borg, I know Vern as well as about 90% of the dealers that do the shows here, have for a very long time. Guess thats becaue I have been around forever. I think I am going to have my 201st birthday soon. : )

ALL coin shows at the Rosemont Convention Center or the hotel accross the street have at LEAST a $5 intrance fee. Dealer tables are really expensive. Parking is a MINIMUM of $11. Rosemont made those buildings in such a way that there is no place to park for miles except in thier pay parking lots. Some, if smart and get there early, park in a CTA parking lot about a mile away but that too has a charge.
No food or drinks is allowed to be brought in from outside so you must buy from them if you buy food or drinks at all.
The upcoming show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel accross the street from the Convention Center also has a charge for parking, $5 for the Friday/Saturday entrance fee. If you want to go on Thursday, it is $50 entrance fee called a professional preview. There is a bar right as you walk in and you really don't want to know how much a Martini is there.

One of the things I mentioned in this forum in the past. The many cautions at a coin show. When you see suspecious individuals walking around and not even attempting to buy or sell anything, try to find a security guard or show representative and report that. Might be nothing but there are way to many individuals robbed on the way home from a coin show. Always smarter to be safe than sorry.

I sure wish there were some local shows out here in Southern California. The closest one I know of is 75 miles away (one way). It sounds exciting to me for you guys to meet up at these shows.

Back in the 1950's and 60's a lot of older people who were still holding gold coins that they hadn't turned in in the 30's thought that they were actually illegal to own. So rather than be caught holding "illegal" coins or leaving the problem to their heirs to deal with and probably get in trouble for having them, they used to slip them into rolls of coins or put them in vending machines. I knew a guy who owned a bunch of vending machines back in the late 50's an he said it was no unusual to find half eagles in the machine that had been used as nickels.

Have you ever rented a ballroom at one of those higher end hotels? Figure three to five thousand dollars a day and UP. Even more for the fancier hotels. Plus a charge for the electrical hookup, about a thousand to two thousand bucks. You run a three day show that's $14K in expenses before the doors even open. You have 100 dealers the table fee has to be $140 each just to pay the hall rent. But there are a lot more expenses that have to be covered so the table fee has to be even higher and higher. But you reach a point where the high table cost starts reducing the number of dealers. The admission fee does two things. It helps to cover the nut and helps kep down the table fee, and those willing to pay the fee are usually more serious collectors and are more likly to buy from the dealers. It weeds out some of the tire kickers Unfortunately it also weeds out some of the curious who might start collecting
