Howdy peeps, I purchased a 1897-P Morgan some time ago and got to looking at it today and realized there's something more to it but I can't find anything on it on VamWorld. It was labeled a VAM-5, with a doubled 18 in the date but on the reverse, IN GOD WE TRUST has a weak E in WE and weak R in TRUST. Does anyone know anything about this, since VamWorld doesn't say anything about it? Ribbit
Hi Toad, you know I'm not a Morgan guy, but I was going to tentatively suggest that some foreign matter- grease?- may have found its way into those 2 letters. I'm sure a Morganologist will have a more insightful idea. How did you obtain those highly magnified, but extremely sharp images? I'm impressed!
I posted this on VAM World and someone said grease filled die also but then, what about the die chips and obvious recutting of IGWT? I think there's more to it than just a grease filled die but I can't prove it. As to the pics, I use a Sony DSC-H7 camera and it has a built in macro feature. Just point and shoot. Ribbit
They do not assign VAM's for strike throughs to my knowledge and that is my assessment of the coin also.
I agree with the VAM 5 assessment and filled letters. The recutting on the reverse would only be important if it was different from the reverses of the other 1897 P reverses ( all were C3a reverses). If the reverse die had pitting, then that would lead to a separate VAM, but if all had recutting then no separate VAMs. Jim
It doesn't look like any other VAM than the 5 for the date. I'm not into Morgans so I know very little about the VAM's, except what I read on here. I was hoping! Ribbit
