I think I have an 1882-O over S. I've never had an error coin. When I look at the mintmark, I can see the curve of the S going under the O. What do you think!
I inherited the collection..so I can't really take credit for anything other than noticing the error in the mintmark. Without a strong magnifying glass, I can see how you could miss this detail.
Looks like VAM 3, best I can see the blowups. Check here, it is easier to tell with a loupe and the actual coin. It also has the other 1882 O/S listings on this site. Jim http://www.vamworld.com/1882-O+VAM-3
Great post! I'm pretty new to coin collecting. I've heard of VAMs, but knew almost nothing about them. After checking coin with 20x loupe and your link to VAM's 3, 4 & 5...I'd say it's a VAM4. I can see the die marks on inside of ear, doubling of 2 in date on outside right loop. Diagonal crossing O in mintmark appears to be recessed. I'll have this coin checked out by a more knowlegable expert, but without your post, I wouldn't have gotten this far...many thanks!
There are some that believe these VAMs are not OMMs and are actually caused by a die break which progressed during the dies' life.
