i have three 2006 ann sets that i wanted to send in to be graded, but i had a guy tell me if my sets were opened that NGC would not grade them, is this true
Well sort of.... Since they are open they are definitely not eligible for Early Release designation it addition, because the sets are opened, the only coin that can be designated from the 20th anniversary set is the reverse proof because this was the only set this coin could be obtained. The other two coins (proof and burnished unc) could be purchased seperately, therefore, the best coins could be cherrypicked from individual purchases and included in the set to be graded. Does this make sense? So essentially, there is no way to confirm whether or not the proof and burnished unc came from the 20th anniversary set or were purchased seperately. Therefore, they cannot be attributed as such, but NGC will still grade them as they are.
Call NGC and ask if you can send them in the original packaging since you want to retain the "Early Release" designation. My experience says they should say "yes". Then have them put the coins in a 3-coin holder. Each coin would be individually graded. But since NGC removed them from the original packaging they can apply the "Early Release" designation to the label also. I find NGC very friendly and if a request is at all reasonable they will accomodate it. Worth a shot.
He said they have been opened so they won't give them the early release designation. No way to prove that set came out in the first thirty days.
