First I want to specify the criteria I've been used to decide what was to be included in my US Type Set. I looked at the following: -- the Red Book -- the PCGS Registry Type Sets -- the NGC Registry Type Sets -- the Dansco Type Set My first criterium was what to include. I finally decided that the NGC Registry Type Sets were the most complete. Specifically: -- the NGC Registry 1792-1964 Copper/Nickel/Silver Type Set -- the NGC Registry 1834-1933 Gold Type Set Then I augmented them with some Red Book listed varieties that NGC didn't include. Currently my definition of a US type set includes 117 coins, some which I don't have -- yet . My next criterium was grade. Basically it was the best coin I could afford AND was of reasonable quality to show what the US Mint had in mind. I tried for VF or better but had to back off that in a number of cases. I tried for original surfaces but had to go with DETAILS coins in some cases. Obviously I'm not going to show them all at once. I'll start with the half cents and keep each group to about 5 at a time. Very nice @kanga. It's a real challenge to even get close to completing any part of these sets when money is part of the equation as it is for most of us. My type set is very close to the same criteria you've used but I have included colonials with some colonial currency examples. Like you, I excluded the pre-1834 gold types, way too expensive for me. But I was surprised to see the NGC Registry set for copper/nickel/silver includes the 1792 date. Does it really include the 1792 half disme?
As I recall, yes. But it's been a while since I looked and I believe NGC has been toying with their registry set definitions. I think Gobrecht Dollars were part of it too. I didn't even consider them also.
@kanga, My half cent type collection is also complete and one of these days I'll post it up but not now or here. I don't want to detract in any way from your fine achievement.
Sounds like you've got a great half cent type set. In addition to what I showed, I also have a full Classic Head Half Cent set with all of the Cohen varieties. And I also have a full Braided Hair business strike half cent set (no 1852's because they are proofs). And I don't have any of the 1840-1849 proofs. I made a decision long ago not to collect proofs of anything. EXCEPTION: My birth year (1941) set includes the proofs.
