I have a old miners bank of savings of alta califorina dated 1857 says payable in gold dust for 25 cents. It looks to be in pritty decent condition. Was wondering if it was something to have framed or keep it in the safe? It also has the date looks hand written 1857 and the name looks like clarke. Was wondering how commen these are or if anyone has any other info on these. I will try to post up a pic here. 005.jpg

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Justin!

There is no need to post this thread in two different forums. The paper money collectors would probably look there, first, anyway.

I don't collect paper money, but perhaps someone else will come along who can tell you about this fractional.

Sorry bout that but after I posted this here I forgot to ask about the framing of it and thought the paper money guys would have a better idea on that.

I don't even know if it is authentic. A lot of stuff like that is reproduced and made to look old just to con someone.

He's already been told it's a replica and several have also echoed why it's a replica compared to an original, genuine note; one of which is the omission of the engraver's name along the bottom edge, which appears on the genuine notes, and his lacks.

I have the same thing. Here is the history of mine. My husband, now deceased was a mining engineer. He found an old strong box safe 3'x3'x2' in a old abandoned mining camp. Heavy old black thing and it had to have taken more than one man to move it. Just recently, after all these years, clear in the back of that old safe in a seam crack was this miners bank note found. It was hardly visible so my husband may not have even seen it. Its identical to one described here. Original date and signature of Clarke.

Hi Shanna.... usually these old threads don’t get much attention. It sounds like you have an interesting piece. Why don’t you start a new thread and include a photo. That would stand a much better chance of getting you some good feedback.

Can you show us pictures of both sides? The picture in the initial post is gone.
