we just enjoying the four different kind of lincoln cents that the mint recently introduced. and at the same time. they are talking of stopping it by next year. i thought the intrinsic value of cent and nickel is down. and the mint should be able to buy at a low prices and continue producing it.

current intrinsic value of our currencies:
    cent - 0.0032
    nickel - 0.0265
    dime - 0.0099
    quarter - 0.0247
    half $ - 0.0495
    sac $ - 0.0307
    prez $ - 0.0307

The cent is not worth much today. I don't know of anything you can buy with one cent now. Not that long ago you could buy a piece of bubble gum with a cent but no more. Cents do come in very handy for making change. That's really their only purpose now.

It would be a shame to discontinue the Cent. It is the only continuously-produced US coin. 1793-present (except for 1815 due to a fire at the Mint). It would be a shame to lose that connection to the past.

I'm in favor of continuing Cent production - for now. Its demise may be forced upon us when the purchasing power of the Cent becomes more and more eroded by the inflation that is sure to come AND when the cost to make a Cent far exceeds its face value.

The Lincoln Cent is a hallmark coin! The 100th anniversary coin should be the end of an old era and a new coin be designed to start another era.

    Just my 2 Lincolns...:D

The cent only recently became Semi-cost effective to produce again due to dropping metal prices and deflation. With metals sure to rise in the near future and the dollar sure to weaken eventually, I would be in favor of eliminating the cent. I love the design and enjoy collecting them. But let's face it, even if we choose to go with the copper plated steel as Canada has, it still serves little purpose in today's commerce.

No. From a practical stand point they serve no purpose.

From a collecting standpoint 101 years (1909 to 2009) is enough. With four different reverse designs this year the integrity, or dare I say purity, of the denomination has become tainted. Don't read more into the above statement than is there. I just believe the Cent as a collectable has been compromised by the Treasury Department. Again, JMHO.

I would like to see the cent continue for one very main reason, taxes. If we discontinue the penny government is going to round up as they are always looking for ways to edge into the pockets of it's citizens.JMHO

i think the cent should be eliminated. maybe a two cents substituted. but i would like the cent continue issue for collectors. such as proof set, silver proof set and mint uncirculated set. the same with that of half dollar.

At this point, it seems more likely that we'll move to a completely cashless/coinless society before Congress gets around to authorizing the elimination of the cent.

The wheat cent was my first love. That is what got me started as a collector
They penny should stay...The nickel should either get the old reverse and obverse, or it should go! lol

I'd like to see the cent stick around. I always have to wonder what people mean when they say we don't need it or we don't use it, or it doesn't buy anything these days. I mean, a dollar doesn't buy anything either. But, the cent is still consistantly the most produced piece of money in the US by nearly three times every single year. That isn't coincidence...thats because we DO use them. 3.5 billion cents on average a year can't be wrong.

Elaine, could you set up a poll for this thread, then we can all vote on it.

I am torn, I like the cent because I get wheats in change and save the old pre-1982 bronze examples - but otherwise they are a complete pain in the bum to accumulate - and the Zincolns are just plain nasty after awhile.

Maybe it would be better if they struck them on copper plated stainless steel or something.

i think that a better question should be - should stores & business round down or up to the nearest 5 cents

if they did - then pennies wouldn't be needed

let's hope the congress will keep the cent. and also hope that the collector's series with cent will continue.

I hope it does happen in my lifetime. The alternative might be a premature exit.

I dont know if I have a decision on this subject as of yet. I like the Lincoln cent, its been the starting point for so many collectors and they are still quite affordable for the most part. On the other hand, I never use cents for day to day transactions. I get them in change but never spend them. I take them home and throw them in my jar.
