Fake NGC Slabs For all of those people who don't know, here is the link This is an older story, so most should know. http://ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=954
Thanks for that. I hadn't seen that one. I personally would have been leery of the font styles on the fake but I'm sure those are good enough to fool the majority. Only a matter of time before they perfect their slabs. Although, you'd think the hologram would be a challenge. I guess the next step is people will need to pass along the paper work that came from NGC when they sell a high end coin with a verification # and phone # to call to verify for the buyer that it was graded by them on the date. Possibly along with photos of unique characteristics the coin exhibits.
Seriously? Integrigy? That's got to be a joke. I've been aware of the counterfeit slabs for awhile now, but those are some pretty egregious spelling errors.
What's worse is that after posting that article, in order to combat the Chinese fakes NGC changed their hologram last February. They put up an article announcing it as well. The new hologram lasted for two days because I pointed out to them they spelled Official wrong on their hologram. They said they were the Offical Grading Service of the ANA.
Thanks T$!! I read that article before and now I saved it to my computer. That is tricky stuff, I tell you. It's simply disgusting that people are doing this. I know some have wanted to quit coin collecting because of this and it does certainly rock me. Doug has pointed out they have always counterfeited in previous posts, but I don't think on a mass level like this. The only solution is for owners to register the coins as theirs and for the graders to have a universal website database you could enter the coin's number into to see if someone already owned it, IMHO. If it's a fake catalog number than the site will say so. This would require people register their coins which would be tough, but at least it would show who was the last owner and you could do some CSI on the coin in question.
Well it is hard, because the numbers on the slabs, are most of the time, authentic numbers. I'm glad this helped!
I guess NGC will have to change their holograms on a regular basis now. Thanks for the post, now we have something else to worry about. At least it keeps everybody on their toes.
Maybe the solution is to know the coins you're buying, rather than trust someone in Florida or Beijing to know for you.
It's not the coin that is tricky, even if it is a fake, the slab is the hardest part Buy the coin, not the slab, is the rule to live buy, but what if both are fake? DANG CHINESE!
Can you please explain a flaw I might catch between the morgans that were minted in the USA and the morgans minted in China, currently. I see no flaws, and can't tell the difference If you can't tell the difference, then how am I supposed to say if it is fake or not? Thank You
