Thanks for all the support! I hope to see some of my local friends there. Tdec: I'm a conservative grader, and I try to sell close to greysheet bid. I think I'm good there! ksparrow: Ah, yes...Vicks Vaporub. Hadn't even thought of that, even though I've seen it in movies, sported by various medical examiners. I'll keep that in mind. Jack: Thanks for the checklist. I had intended to prepare one, but yours looks pretty complete. I'll use it!!! Eduard: I hope we can meet someday. Let me know when you'll be in the area, and I'll look for shows. BHP: I was already prepared enough such that I know I'll have no problem transporting my items and getting them set up. I even did a trial run at home! If I'm next to someone I don't like, I can deal with that, but seriously...if you knew the guys I was talking about, you'd know what I mean. I'm worried about them scaring away customers! I'm not trying to project a bad image. I actually expect to do pretty well, but it is my first show, and I want to be realistic...that's all. For every one who wished me well...Thanks! I appreciate the support.
I wish you a "great show"!!! I wish you a "great show"!!! - actually though it's been over 10 years ago when I did my first one it went much better that I ever thought it would. New dealers sometimes get a lot of attention because everybody has already looked the regulars stock over and like some fresh meat. That can be a pitfall also because the "vest pocket" guys will zero in on you and want something for nothing because your new - I'll shut up now.
Hey best of luck with that show. If your going to keep with the show stuff, you may want to check out the shows in the Chicago, Illinois area. Not far from you. They are getting bigger and bigger lately. There is one almost every Sunday within a few miles of Chicago. The one on the 3rd Sunday of each Month is a place called Itasca has doubled in size lately. They supply the tables and several chairs for customers. Really a safe area, in a Holliday Inn, security guards, free coffee in the lobby but I think it was supposed to be for Hotel Guest. If your show goes well you may want to look up some of the ones here. Not to far to drive.
to reduce the chance for theft, deal with one customer at a time for the stuff that it would hurt to lose. go slow and write down everything. if someone is being pushy to see a coin in your case, ignore them, they probably won't buy it. that sounds harsh, but while your attention is diverted to the jerk, the quiet guy looking at a stack of coins just palmed one of the nicer ones in the stack. you'll get a feel for who you can trust, and the answer is not the guy who has been a regular at the shows and club for 25 years. -steve
Good advise, you will be fresh meat and must realise that. I learned in advance thanks to some of the threads I read here and on the CU forums.
