There have been some good posts, true. I guess the attitude comes through louder than the actual information on some posts. Mine included.

    Tom,
Maybe what you see as "wealth" comes from decades of collecting and trading, and doing without many fun things others have, to accumulate the wonderful coins they have. Maybe the "ego" you see is knowledge and experience and learning, from a similar long term investment of time. Since the membership probably ranges from 13 to 94, there will be times when, what they might feel is just their friendly jesting wit, is misinterpreted by the recepient. I do not know how many different cultures or nations are represented here, but that should be considered.

I belong to more than 5 forums, and I find each one is a different "flavor". Some have more novices, some more experts. Some with a whole store of exotic coins, some who have a AU walking liberty as their best. Some with younger collectors, other with mainly Yuppies. Google coin forum and see what pops up. I do hope you stay with us and learn with us, but if that is not your future, I hope you find a forum you like.

Yes, every other coin forum of which I am a member. This one is by far the most friendly and conducive to learning. Just one question before you jet, what exactly in this thread precipitated your initial response? Because I didn't see any displays of wealth, ego, or condescension. I saw an intelligent discussion about how to best obtain key date coins.

I've never been much of a key date collector for one simple reason....most key dates aren't really keys to the set. Yes, they may be the most popular for one reason or another, but most times the real keys are overlooked. Is the 09 S VDB really the key to the Lincoln set? I bet Lincoln experts here can name at least a dozen real keys that make that one seem almost insignificant within that series. Every series has the same story.

I guess what I'm getting at is, hype makes keys more than availability. Define a key coin through knowledge of the series, not by what Ebay dictates, and you'll have a whole new perspective on collecting.

Paul- great point. I just lurk on the PCGS site (Collector's Universe) and post a little on NGC boards. This site is the most open to new collectors and really collectors of all sorts. There is some extreme anti-cleaning stuff on here but we have some lively debates and learn a lot. People get pretty nasty on NGC re various subjects, so I like it here the most.:hatch:

I wouldn't consider out cleaning stance particularly extreme. Look how much damage cleaning has done over the last century to very important coins.

That aside for the moment, I don't even have to go to those sites to know what I'll find in terms of the conversation on those TPG sites. Those guys are in extreme competition with each other, and a lot of them have the pockets to exploit their egos. How else do you explain those prices for MS70 recent releases. Just look at usenet (or even comp.os.lang.perl for that matter). Coin Talk is a very fertile environment and you have to thank Peter and Doug for that, especially Doug...not to say anything bad about Peter, but generally it is Doug in the trenches.

As a side note, I'm not a moderator and not moderating, but I would ask you to look at your SIG from my perspective and give it some thought. I love talking with you Boss, but your sig is driving me nuts. I won't say another word on this in the forum ... although you are welcome to PM or email me if you wish.

i see what you mean religious comments should not be allowed in the sig line. next thing we know someone posts if u dont worship UHR u r not a human in their signature. spot on :thumb:

and in case anyone thinks i am being extreme we actually had someone who was a shame ont he community but we promptly sent him on his way a year or so ago.

My forum activities mirror yours. I lurk on PCGS, have never posted, not even once. I just don't want to get in that many arguments. I post a few times a week on the NGC boards because the topics are not as interesting or diverse as they are here. On this board, I post everyday.

Thanks for the thoughts Jim. We just didnt' hit it off well from the get go. I need to find people who don't think they know everything, be a little open to "bad ideas". This seems like a place where coin shop owners get together and brag about their wares. I don't know what I expected here, but it wasn't this. Been very confrontational, almost from the beginning. I'm out of my league in here, hence, my question where the poor people meet (maybe people that collect circulated coins/maybe can't afford ms coins..that kinda crowd, and that AIN'T here. So how do you delete your account/name?

Everyone is an equal here and everyone gets to voice an opinion.
Many here collect from pocket change to build sets, including myself.
I have never heard a post making fun of those that do so.

Folks do post different opinions and collect different coins but I would expect nothing less from any forum. This is a fun place no matter what you collect.
It's really what you make of it. No need to leave Tom. You are just as good as anyone here.

Tom, it's quite possible that you are reading into some posts "attitude" that just isn't there. As we all know, reading/writing posts is a woefully poor way of communicating -- it's easy to misconstrue, misunderstand, etc. when hand gestures, facial expressions, tone, etc., are missing.

My suggestion (as I've made in another thread) is to give the benefit of the doubt -- i.e., if you think, but are not positive, that someone has "attitude", then assume they do not. Life's a lot more pleasant that way.

Hey Tom- Don't let Mr. Brooklyn scare you away. Comments like that should be ignored. Some people just don't know any better.

You're far from being out of your league here at CT. There are many great people here from different aspects of coin collecting. Some here are just beginning and some have been around the hobby forever, this is what makes us such a great group of people. Even those of us thats been around the hobby for 30+ years are still learning, the process never stops, theres always something new to learn. As far as this not being a place for those on a limited income or cant afford to buy much, thats probably the situation of alot of the members here, not everyone can afford to go out and spend thousands of dollars on a single coin. Yes, we are that kind of crowd. Contrary to what you may think, alot of us do collect circulated coins, I do because they have character. They've been somewhere and have a history all their own. I myself own very few MS coins. Stick around and be proud of what you collect, no matter how little or big your collection may be. There are collectors of all levels here, some of the best, and thats how we learn.

AAHHHHH so you figured out about our secrete society of the filthy rich coin collectors and dealers. We all thought everyone knew that to be on this web site you must have at least 15 of those 1913 Liberty Head Nickels. You could join us in our sneaky methods and ways by just putting all your $100 bills into those slots in your computer for us.
I'd let you in more of our rich persons web site but my Chaufer just informed me it's time to go for a ride in one of my many Rolls Royces. :goofer::goofer:
