Why didn't I buy 100 from the Mint ????...:headbang: I didn't buy any....:crying: People who got them made some good $$$:thumb: MY FAVORITE ASE
They changed the obv hub as well but the changes aren't as obvious. Back at the beginning of 2008 a lot of people kept trying to state that the Hub of 07 reverse was a deliberate "error" in order to get sales up. As evidence they would point to the pictures in the Mint's advertisments that showed a 2008 with a 2007 hub reverse. What they never bothered to notice was that the 2008 had a hub of 2007 OBVERSE as well. The pictures didn't "Prove" a planned "error", it showed that they didn't have a 2008 for pictures and the photoshopped a 2007 for the advertisments.
I have three of these types of ASE's all NGC graded 69. I have a '07, '08 with '07 reverse, and '08. Don't have any plans to collect any more of this type and one of these days I will make a display for the three. Will it go up in value? I have tendency to think in four to five years it will, but who knows. I am confident it will never be less than what I paid for it, and it probably wouldn't matter what it will be worth in a few years I have no plans to sell. My sons will probably see it worth a good sum of money someday.
Why would a variety/error like this be overrated? Is the 72DDO Lincoln overrated? Is the 55DDO overrated? Lets use something more recent... Is a Washington dollar blank rim overrated? Is the Adams mule overrated? Isn't this what coin collecting is all about? Isn't this the goal for those of us who search rolls is to find that "error" or "unique" coin. I can't imagine anyone collecting anything and not at one time or another wish that I could find that one unique item..... different from everyone else. Well this is it for this series. Other than some lamination errors that I have seen, I don't know of any other variety or error for this series. Does anyone else?... please let me know. So, for those of us who collect these, the 2008/2007rev is a big deal. Is is overrated? Maybe if you don't collect them, but then again, I don't expect any other respose. Something becomes overrated when 1. Someone else has it and you don't, 2. You wish you had the item but can't afford it, or 3. You don't collect them and can't figure what the big deal is. So when someone asks me if the Merc 41/42 and 42/41 is overrated, I say yes because 1. someone else has it and I don't, 2. I wish I could afford the item and I can't and 3. I am not looking to collect these and I don't know what the big deal is. JMHO.
I suspect that most think these coins are overrated because they aren't "real" coins. They are simply bullion. This prejudice is hard to combat even with reason and will never go away.
