You know, I don't remember the mint saying that they are holding any silver dollars back this year for the Legacy sets. I know they are holding back 50k of the Lincoln proofs for the special comm set. And now I am hearing about the 25K for a Braile special mint set. But I ahve not heard anything about holding anything back for the Legacy. Not that it matters since I gave up collecting the Legacy in 2007 and sold my collection, but I know there were a few people on here that collected those. Were these sets part of the mint cut back?

Danr posted this in another thread. He got it from mintnewsblog.com.

"The maximum authorized mintage for the commemorative coin offering is 500,000 across all ordering options. In order to attain a sell out, individual coin sales must reach a combined level of 450,000. A special five coin set containing the proof version of the coin will be offered later in the year and 50,000 coins will be reserved for the set. There was initially some speculation about whether another 50,000 coins would be reserved for inclusion in the American Legacy Collection, however I have now been told that this product is discontinued for 2009."

The Legacy Set is not listed in their schedule. But then neither are a few other listed options. We'll have to wait and see...

Not sure I like the idea of a Braille coin. It's bound to end up with fingerprints all over it ;)

I hope they don't do what the Perth mint in Australia did with their comm space coins.... they put some kind of permanent sealer on the coin so it can be touched without damaging the coin. Here is their discription from the website. http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...tnik-1957-2007-silver-proof-orbital-coin.aspx

    Neat coin though.....

    Wear-Resistant Finish

Instead of being housed in a capsule, the coin is coated with a transparent wear-resistant finish, allowing you to orbit Sputnik around the Earth without contaminating the proof quality of the coin.

According to this article. the Legacy set will be discontinued for 2009. Look toward the bottom of the first paragraph after the sales number. I do not know how accurate this is.

Sure there has got to be a reason but why did they release this commemorative so close to the Lincoln.
