I've begun to collect certified rainbow toned Morgans. Here are a couple starters. They are both in NGC holders. Feel free to grade away.
Careful, Rainbow Toned Coins can be very addictive!!! Nice Coins! Hard to tell from pic's but I'll guess; # 1 MS 65 # 2 MS 65* Scott
MS 65 (maybe 66) and MS 64. Both coins are beautiful, I wouldn't be surprised if either was PL, probably the 1st one though.
I must really be off . I still say the bottom coin deserves a 63 but market grades a 64 and the top coin a 64* that NGC gave a 65 . rzage
rzage, actually you are probably the closest with your technical grades. Here are the results: thanks for the compliments!
The pictures hide the surface marks, the 63 PL looks cleaner than the 64 and the 64 was graded before the NGC did the STAR designation.
How is the Blue? Is it Bright and Flashy in the light? or just light blue? How is the Luster? NGC only charges 10.00 for designation review so if the luster is good and the color is vibrant it might be worth the shot...
I agree with that completely. Because of the rather common nature of rainbow toned Morgans, NGC is tougher on that series when it comes to awarding the star. The coin must have both color and luster. The luster is what makes the color explode off the coin. Here is a good example of the difference that luster makes with regards to rainbow toning. The first coin is very colorful with shades of greens, blues, and violets, but the toning is so deep that it has impeded the luster of the coin. As a result the coin appears rather flat. The second coin on the other hand has blazing luster that makes the rainbow colors seem to dance on the surface of the coin. IMO, I don't think either of those two coins would star but the appearance could be different in hand.
Yeah, good point. I haven't received the coins yet, and since the displayed pictures are scans, it could go either way. I do understand what you mean about the luster, so we'll see when the coins arrive.
I'm surprised with the grade of the first coin, I thought it was a 65. I guess the pics, and toning are hiding some of the nicks. Still very nice coins :thumb:.
I purchased both of these coins for about $70 a piece. It seemed a decent price considering the toning, but I don't really know how to value these coins. Considering the grades are correct, and there is not enough pizzazz to merit a star designation on either; is this a fair price?
Yes, since there are no big money colors like Emerald Green and Bright Magenta or Rainbow Bands 70.00 is about right.
