Cleaning out our attic we found old WWII money in excellent shape which i know is worthless and some beat up coins, and an 1898-O Barber Quarter. My question is i took looked it up online and really didn't find alot, took it to a local coin dealer and he offered 100 bucks and said he would be doing me a favor. Should i take him up on the offer, i was told to send it to PCGS and see what they say. Thank you i have posted some Pics and do have some more if needed
Ahhh... In your attic you say... I don't know..but this could be NATURAL toning... I'm not for sure This quarter is beautiful, and he is doing you no favors!!! It has full rims, and a lot of luster... This coin is in AU50-MS62 grade and can be worth around $390-$1,200 If this coin happens to be artificially toned, I'd send it into NGC, they grade a lot of artificial toned coins, they might give it a MS61 with a star designation Hope this helps~
Whoa. $100? HA! the 98-O is a semi-key date Barber, and, on top of that, your coin appears to be in pretty nice shape, AU or better. It also appears to be attractively toned. Tough to tell the grade but it might even swing uncirculated, but I can't tell from the pics. I'd think an attractively toned, uncleaned 1898-O Barber Quarter is worth $3-400+ in AU and more, possibly much more in MS. It has been said on here that Berber coins come two ways, Worn out and Expensive. Yours is not worn out. Sending it into PCGS is not a bad idea if you wish to sell it.
Sorry, i do not know what toning is but i have inteligence not to clean it. NGC and PCGS is one preferedover the other and are there charges for sending this stuff to them? It was in an old White Owl Cigar box along with the WWII paper money wraped in a shotty looking envelope. Thank you for your help in advance.
Charges...BIG CHARGES!!! Toning is coloring on the coin, as you can see, you have a rainbow, and it looks great www.pcgs.com www.ngccoin.com Search around, and you'll see the grading charges... It will get expensive., and is not worth doing unless you sell it
Truthfully it's not worth sending in. Any dealer who says, "I would be doing you a favor.". Means I am untrustworthy and you better watch your wallet! The pictures are blurry but the back of the head doesn't look very clear & may be a bit worn. So I'm actually thinking Extremely Fine. 2009 red book says in that condition it retails for $300. (Red book is usually low on keys as they go up almost weekly). So a reputable dealer would offer maybe $200 - $250.
I didnt realize how big coin collecting is i looked @ PCGS and would love to have this coin graded at a MS61 which they list @ 785. Now i guess i look for a reputable dealer in my area.
It looks like it would cost me about 50 bucks to get it done trhough PCGS if i am looking at it right. As i will probably sell it. If there is anyone in the Birmingham,MI area that would like to look at it and give their opinion let me know.
I'd send it off and have it graded. I like NGC but PCGS will work also. Nice find, just don't leave it laying around. Try to place it some were it will be safe from being hit, rubbed or pushed along a surface.
Excellent looking specimen. I'll do you a favor, and take it off your hands for say...150? Very nice coin.
That dealer is absolutely trying to swindle you. This coin has AU details minimum and might actually be mint state, but it is very hard to tell from those photos. It is also difficult to determine the actual color scheme from those photos. The reverse looks OK, but the obverse will almost certainly body bag for artificial toning even if the toning was actually caused by improper storage in your attic. That combination of blue and violet with no progression or depth is not found on naturally toned coins. Despite the fact that it will probably body bag, you should still probably send the coin to PCGS and roll the dice. It will at least slab as genuine with AU/MS details and if the color is attractive, it will probably still sell for several hundred dollars even if it is a problem coin. If the photos are making the toning look worse than it actually is, the coin might actually grade out giving you a fairly valuable coin. My suggestion is to send the coin to PCGS to obtain a minimum grade of genuine and give the coin authentication. Please don't listen to T$'s comment about NGC being more accepting of AT coins than PCGS, that is an opinion not based on facts. And whatever you do, don't sell the coin to that dealer for $100.
I am going to try and scan the coin to get a better image for everyone won't be till Saturday afternoon. I am trying to do a crash course online by looking up coin grading qualities and keep an eye on the tournament as well. I am going to go to a couple of other dealers and get their opinion.
Oh really.... Go to anywhere, any site that sells coins, and any dealer, and look at the toned coins... Most PCGS toned coins, have, get this REAL TONING, nothing artificial... Go to ebay right now and type in toned morgan NGC... Count how many real ones, and fake ones there are. I'm not idiot, and I know what I'm talking about
