I was sitting here and earlier was reading the thread about the fakes and counterfeits on the bay and was wondering what coin you consider to be the most counterfeited. I saw a lot of 1909 s and 1914 d Lincolns what do you consider the worst. Ice
By counterfeited do you also mean altered coins? If so, my list would be: 1916-D Dime 1914-D Cent 1909-S VDB Cent 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel All $2 1/2 Indians All $5 Indians All $1 Gold
If you mean coin series rather than a specific coin, my vote would have to be Trade dollars. The one US coin I'd never dare to buy raw, despite the feelings I otherwise have about slabbed coins. It's just faked so much that it's worth it to have a professional opinion about authenticity (but not grade). Early silver dollars are faked quite a bit too. Specific coins, way too many too name. 1909 S VDB Lincoln cents are faked quite a bit. So are copper 1943 Lincoln cents (though usually so badly it doesn't take a coin expert to spot them as fakes). The favorite fake I ever caught on ebay was an 1844 CC Seated Liberty dollar. You don't even have to see that one to figure out why it's fake (the Carson City Mint didn't even exist until 1870!).
In my list the gold coins are typically counterfeited, i.e., they are completely fake. The other coins are usually altered, i.e., they are genuine coins that have been altered (e.g., 1944-D Cent altered to appear to be a 1914-D Cent or a 1916 Dime with an added mintmark).
Trade Dollars would have to be the most counterfeited US coin. Then on other currencies, there are 8 Reales, Thalers, British & French Trade Dollars. :hammer: I won't buy a raw TD on Ebay because of how many are counterfeits. :goofer: Ribbit
By including altered coins any key in any denomination has to rank towards the top and I would agree with previous answers. But probably the single most counterfeited coins as a group would be ancients. Even though there are millions and millions of genuine examples, the fakes probably outnumber the genuine examples.
type II gold dollars and three dollar gold pieces. Back when ANACS first opened they reported that two thirds of all the type II gold dollars and three doller gold pieces that were submitted were fakes
So it really is a hodge podge of coins that are being faked/counterfeited/altered. It makes me nervous to even want to buy a key date or semi key date coin. I guess read, learn, read some more and look at a lot of coins. Ice
It for this reason only that its a good idea to buy all of your key and semi key coins in a slab by one of the top TPGs. If you're spending alot of money on key dates wouldn't you feel more comfortable knowing you're spending your hard earned cash on a genuine example? Wouldn't it be depressing to find out that you just dropped $6,000 dollars on a raw 1916-D Mercury Dime to find out later that its fake? Na, not me.
