Though this is not a rare coin, the portrait made it a must buy. I really like the first year denarii for Domitian. I find the differing portrait styles very interesting. I love the dark toning on this one as well. Please post your darkly toned coins or anything else you find appropriate or relevant. The condition is extremely nice. There are plenty of reasons to like this coin.

I have this denarius of Domitian, but as a Caesar under Titus!
Dom.jpg I do have one when he was the emperor with Minerva, although the year is unkown. domitian.jpg
And for a dark toned coin, here is a denarius of Titus as Caesar COS VI/MARS.

    @Orfew......Now that's a very nice coin!....Love the toning and a cool portrait!
I'm not into 'shiny' , so here's one of mine I purchased from @Finn235 last year that has obviously been in a cabinet tray for many years....One of my favs..
JULIA SOAEMIAS, mother of Elagabalus. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.87 gm).
Obverse..IVLIA SOEMIAS AVG, draped bust right.
Reverse..VENVS CAELESTIS, Venus standing left, holding apple and sceptre; star in left field.

Thank you for your post, @Orfew — When I was looking through my coins, I came to realize that I have more Domitians than any other Emperor—most are from Antioch.

    This is my favorite.

    Also—Your website is superb!

Very nice coin, as always, Orfew.
I tend to prefer the early portraits of Domitian. This is not one of them, but the toning is what you ask for:

    Domitian D1.jpg

Domitian, 81-96. Denarius, Rome, January - September 90.

Obverse: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIIII Laureate head of Domitian to right.

Reverse: IMP XXI COS XV CENS P P P Minerva walking to right, holding spear and shield.

    Reference: BMC 164. BN 157. Cohen 261. RIC² 689.

Weight: 3.11g. Diameter: 19. Conservation: Toned. Good very fine.

Ray my friend, thanks so much for your kind words. I am so happy to once again see you posting here. I have missed your presence here. I find in these tumultuous times that I am trying to find gratitude once again. Gratitude is not the word that occurs to us first when we face such times but it is surely what we need. So my friend I wanted to take the time to express gratitude for you. I hope you and yours are safe and well.

Nice coin Orfew, congratulations. I only have a few coins of Domitian, of which this is my earliest. A well know, common coin, but with peculiar facial features compared to later coins of Domitian.
