This was in with a collection I bought today that's been in the closet for 30+ years. I didn't think too much of it until I realized it had a better mint/assayer mark. All I know about these are what I found through Google today. I understand these had contemporary fakes back then. The weight & diameter check out okay, though it's not perfectly round. Not sure if it was dropped or someone was stealing silver from it. Probably cleaned. NGC says this might be a $200 coin. I don't want to be selling fakes though. Would you list it if it were yours?
What is the edge design supposed to be for these type? I think confirming the edge design would be a critical point to determine whether it is genuine. Beyond that, and I have little experience with this type of 8 Reales, but the design and look have the right feel.
Looks genuine enough to me but I don't think you'll get much for it at all, maybe $40-$45 on feebay. It may be best just to hang onto it! What has happened to the surface, you have it in hand that's why I ask. Looks like it may have been stored with something harmful.
No, I do not think this is genuine. The edge in particular does not look right. What is the actual weight in grams to two decimal places, if you can? If you post in the Coincomunity forum you should get some opinions from experts (I am not one for Mexican Republic issues)
I agree, had to look at one of mine but I think you're right, it explains the surface issues as well! I think that coin is a fake! Here's mine, with the edge!
