Years ago my mother told me her uncle was an engraver at the US Mint, and he designed one of the four "1s" at the corners of the Obverse. She said they had 4 different engravers design each "1." Any thoughts on whether there were multiple engravers and who they were?
He would have worked at the Bureau of Engraving, not the Mint. If so, he would have worked on much more than that one item. What was his name?
The reason I ask for his name is that there was a book published about 15 years ago called The Engravers Line. It has short bios of every engraver that the author could find information on. It includes information on the items that each of them worked on.
Many of the BEP engravers are specialized in certain genres. Some do portraits, some do buildings and some do other features found on our paper money. This note has autographs from two of the BEP engravers that worked on the vignettes displayed on this note. Kenneth Kipperman engraved the portrait and Christopher Madden engraved the building on the back.
