I just wanted to share a new addition to my family. It all started with the single medal of the Santa Maria given to me by a friend. and about 4 years later a coin dealer friend of mine just gave this set to me.

It is a set of (4) 24kt gold layered medallions issued by the Sociedad Estatal del Quinto Centenario in 1992 commemorationg the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovering the Americas. It is in a nice mahogany case that can either stand up on a desktop or hang on a wall. The coins depict Christopher Coulumbus, Queen Isabela, the Santa Maria, and one medal showing all three ships(the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta).

I hope everyone enjoys! I wish I could take a picture of the whole case, but I still don't have a camera, so I have to stick with scans.

    This is the common reverse:

What really suprised me is that after a little searching I found ou that it is worth(I should say appraised at) between 75 and 110 dollars. Who would pay that much IDK. But it is nice.

I finally ran across it in the back of my safe. This is the one that started it all. I don't know how this one came to be because the only different varieties I see are the bronze and Gold layerd cupro-nickel. Maybe the gold was taken off?

I have five of these and they all look to be silver. A Isabel La Catolica, Cristobal Colon, Santa Maria, Los Reyes Catolicos, and Las Tres Carabelas. They sure sound like silver and they weigh 0.8 regular ounces. Anymore ideas? I need to sell them.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi:

Has anyone ever take one of these 24K layered coins to a dealer/jeweler to see if it's really pure silver underneath?

I also have a set of these and i'm thinking they are not Silver, but unfortunately they are bronze coins that have been plated with 24K gold.

    Thanks for any help.

    Chuck.
