Looks like it's just a hole in the ear shy of a commercial Full Head. Nice strike, although the 25s do come relatively well struck for the type. It appears authentic to me!
I have a serious question about the authenticity of this coin, but it might be the image. Don't we have another SLQ expert who can chime in?
Please feel free to point out any features you have suspected, it's valuable. I should update here with the original picture too as i uploaded to the world and ancient coins section.
I know we have guys here who can give a fairly accurate authentication of the coin from photos, although nothing is like having it in hand. But for me, the walls, and shield cause concerns and the head of the eagle doesn't look right. The head also seems to cartoony for me. But when you posted the second image, all that fell more into what I would expect. I also agree with Dave that the cloth might not look right either. It seems to stiff. This coin is subtle and graceful in its design, and not bold. I shopped for a SLQ Type I for a long time on line and looked real close at a lot of coins and images in that time. When you first posted the coin, it immediately caused me to question it. But I don't really have the expertise to make a determination and Bill, who sees far more of these things than I do, thinks it looks OK. Ruben
that last photo would have caused me much less concern. I've been fooled by photo's BTW and almost brought a SLQ from NYC no less that Doug informed me was likely a fake. I think Dooug might be on the road right now but he'll eventually chime in. I'll tell you what problem I have though, that is not going away. You see the vertical line on the right thigh of liberty (left side of coin). That is a detail that one usually only sees on the highest graded SLQs, like this one It's appearances is inconsistent with a coin that exhibits that much wear and lack of detail of strike on the shield and head. Ruben
Actually, that is a good example of what I mean. This coin has a sharp vertical line like the original posters, but it also accompanies a sharp detailed head, full or not, and sharp shield details. Ruben
It's missing the left eye...not to mention a few breast feathers on the reverse. Notice how your SLQ has chain mail where mine is comfortable around me fully naked. Ruben
its not missing anything its a PQ coin and has been designated as a FH you on the other hand will soon be missing a few feathers and please note i dont want to know why you consider your coins naked and how you make them comfortable around you. this is a family forum
there should be a law molesting coins like that and it has done u a lot of harm ever since u acquired it for your mental stability u need to give me that coin for $50
