ANA has released the course schedule for ANA Summer Seminar 2009. (Summer Seminar is part of the new ANA Florence Schook School of Numismatics.) You can download a copy of the course catalog and registration form at the ANA web site . Or you can get a copy of the course catalog in the March issue of the Numismatist. Some courses fill up quickly (e.g., Counterfeit Detection and Basic Grading). Register early so you don't miss out. There are several new things for Summer Seminar this year. In addition to the 4 1/2-day courses that have always been offered, this year there are several 2-day courses to choose from. So, rather than dedicating your week to a single topic you can take two different courses. I think this is a great idea. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee will meet in a public forum on June 29th. This is your opportunity to voice your opinions and possibly influence the nation's coinage. Also, some big names will be there. More about that later. In each session several mini-seminars are offered in the evenings. This is a great way to learn a little about other areas of numismatics. Tour Seven Falls. Take a Murder Mystery Dinner Train Ride Through Royal Gorge. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Denver Mint. (The Mint tour is EXCELLENT!!) Summer Seminar is held on the campus of Colorado College. Lodging is available on-campus or off-campus. Chaperones are there for the youngsters. It is a friendly, safe atmosphere for young and old alike. Each session has an ANA book sale on Sunday morning. Get there early and buy some great books for cheap. Each session also has a YN Auction to raise money for scholorships for Young Numismatists. And then there is the Banquet on Thursday night; great food and great entertainment. I will say this about ANA Summer Seminar - I know of nowhere else one can obtain a better numismatic education. Peter and others, There are lots of scholorships out there for Summer Seminar. Many local coin clubs and other organizations offer scholorships. Below are a few I found doing a quick Google search: ANA YN Scholorships Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association Tennessee State Numismatic Society PNG YN scholorship Missouri Numismatic Society Ancient Coin Collectors Guild This is for 2007. Not sure if they will offer a scholorship for 2009. Central States Numismatic Society 2010 Georgia Numismatic Association Tennessee State Numismatic Society 2007 - Not sure if they will offer a scholorship for 2009. Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association Blue Ridge Numismatic Association Johnson County (Kansas) Numismatic Society 2004 - 3 Adults + 1 YN - Not sure if they will offer a scholorship for 2009. FUN California State Numismatic Association Article from past YN scholorship recipient Ozarks Coin Club They are always very well represented. I think they offer scholorships. Just a heads up for those who are mulling over going to the Summer Seminar, I called ANA today and there are still spaces available, even in the courses that fill up first.
I will be there teaching the beginning grading class during week 2. I am quite sure it will be much different than any other beginning grading class ever taught during the summer seminar. I would love to have several Coin Talk members in my class! Mike
John Feigenbaum; owner of DLRC, DLRC Auctions and DGS will assist me the first couple of days and am trying to recruit a couple more. I don't want to say who they are right now because I don't want to get folks' hopes up. So, no, I won't be teaching by myself but I believe I could. There is nothing that says I have to teach it the same ole way all before me have! For instance, there will be much more emphasis on grading circulated coins than most get in the Summer Seminar grading courses. Thanks for asking! Mike

There is always something going on. Go to the [www.money.org]ANA web site[/url] and navigate to the Summer Seminar course schedule where you will find a list of all the activities. There are classes during the day, mini-seminars in the evenings as well as bull sessions. They offer field trips to the Denver Mint, baseball games, Cripple Creek gold mine, local sights, etc. The coin show is in between the two sessions - Friday to Sunday (July 3 to July 5).
Summer Seminar is the best numismatic experience on the planet! Sure, the classes are great but there is so much more! When not in class you get to visit with, in very informal settings, the other instructors and collectors in a way you will not get elsewhere. You can parlay this into more specific learning on virtually any numismatic front you choose, or network like never before, or make many great lifelong collecting friends and on and on. Much of this takes place in one of the most remarkable and serene settings you will ever experience. We call it the Moonlight Lounge. Out on an open patio with a direct, rather close veiw of Pike's Peak many of the instructors, students and staff get together every night. There is often live music as well. If you are going and play an instrument, bring it with you! These nights are the ones I live for! You may also participate in the mini-seminars, tours and other events. The week flies by and leaves you yearning for more. Every Wednesday night is the YN Auction, easily one of the funnest, most hilarious and beneficial nights in all of numismatics. You just have to experience it at least once. But I warn you, once you have you are very likely to return. Oh, and yes, there is a great coin show on the weekend between the two weeks.
