Well, I ended up going with the Canon G9. I love it, although I'm still teaching myself to use it. (Because manuals are for sissys. Lol). Now I reach my next problem, lighting. I know what to do, but I'm not sure how. While I was at the ANA, I saw the setup they use. A while back, Doug Mudd had an article in the numismatist on how to build it. Does anyone have a copy of the article they would be willing to scan and send to me?
I don't. I do recall that it was after September 2007 and that it was towards the back of the magazine. (I forgot to multiquote. Dang)
I have/use the G9. It's a great camera, but for coin photos, I believe it has shortcomings in the closeup functionality. I've gotten around this to a certain extent by shooting the photos at 12 megapixels, then cropping and saving as smaller files in tif (LZW - lossless) or jpg formats.
I checked my back issues Ardatirion. Plenty of stuff by Doug Mudd but they are mostly on ancients...not building or setting up something for photography.
Most of the gem and jewelry photographers recommend the EZ light box. Here is the url for the "reference section", but one can click on the tabs to see their products. I don't recall anyone here saying they used one, so I thought I would comment. Lots of info here for taking photos. http://www.tabletopstudio.com/TTS_Product_Photography_Tips.html
