This is sort of in the realm of fantasy, but what do you think would have been the best coin that was never made? It can be something similar to existing designs or something completely different; any era or century; any denomination or material; one year or a series.

My vote is for a Capped Bust Silver Dollar series to fill in the 1805-1835 hole.

My vote is for the Washlady design. Now I know that it is a little disrespectful to wish the Morgan Dollar away, but I have always loved this design.

    1919-21 Australian Square Penny Pattern
A legendary Australian rarity, the Square Kookaburra Penny resulted from the Melbourne Mint's attempts to find a lighter, more durable alternative to copper pennies and halfpennies. The Mint struck approximately 200 Pattern coins, which were distributed to politicians and dignitaries for assessment. The project died with the resignation of the then Treasurer, but the Square Penny has lived on as one of Australia's most valuable and highly sought after rarities.

Above text and picture below from AUSTRALIAN HISTORICAL COIN COLLECTION. The reverse is one of the several proposed types, all sharing great simplicity of design. (Ignore the obverse.)

Gotta ask - would you love the design quite as much if it didn't have that amazing toning? Tho that design is surely quite beautiful, vigorous and an excellent example of the art of engraving.

And wouldn't it be cool if they found a way to ensure that every coin of a certain pattern would develop interesting and variable tonings over the years? There'd be people (like you and I) willing to pay premiums for particularly nice - and maybe unique - tonings. It'd also be a way for coin issuers to achieve a series with lots of scarcity value - for the cost of a single design. The mints would find the economics very attractive.

I like the Sac but that is not bad at all. If refined a little it would make a great coin.

I'm not extremely found, though, of the waving Eagle.

I would love to see a return to the Lady Liberty concept of the early 1800's coins (the design by GDJMSP is really pretty good). Sorry, but IMHO presidents and buildings make pretty boring coins. (I do like that Square Kookaburra Penny, though)

Now that's a coin. I love it, we need to get back to our roots. GD you have my vote as mint coin designer.

that is so beautifull, if I was in charge back then, I would have made that the half dollar and stay with the Morgan for the dollar.

I am going going to go with the $20.00 SaintGaudens Indian. I hate the coins with dead Presidents. I even posted about it. I don't even collect coin after 1964. I love standing liberties walking liberties seated liberties I could go on and on. Sorry I hate modern day circulated coins. Ice

that is the coolest. That eagle is the most amazing eagle I've seen on a coin. I don't collect new coins, but I would if that coin was minted.

This is so weird. In all these years I've been lucky enough to never had anyone with my name in my social circles or any on line group. You are really freaking me OUT!

    But here is a present!
