I'm currently going the the hoard left behind by my friend's father, who passed away recently from cancer. I came across a few old bills, and I'll admit I don't know anything about paper money. So, I'm requesting help with an identification (Fr #), grade, and value for these pieces:
@SteveInTampa should be able to help you. Edit: The signature combinations on both notes will help you deduce the Friedberg number.
Fr. 237 1923 $1 Silver Certificate Speelman/White If I had to estimate a grade for this note, I’d estimate it would warrant a grade or F-15 or possibly VF-20. The nature of the folds precludes your note from attaining a higher grade. Estimated Value: $30 to $45. Fr. 39 1917 $1 Legal Tender Note Speelman/White I'd estimate this note’s grade as a VG-8 or VG-10. It has seen prolonged circulation, as evidenced by the paper quality. Estimated Value: $50.00
Unfortunately, I would have to say no to both, condition is just to bad ! you would be in the hole from the start, fees, shipping would be more then the value there worth.
And I'm not opposed to keeping them raw. Merely asking questions. What grade/value would you give these?
Appreciate the help! I understand that folds are bad - but can you explain a bit more about number of folds, severity of folds, and how the folds affect the grade? I was reading the PMG currency grading guide, but any elaboration would be great. For example, how many folds or how severe would be allowed for EF vs VF?
Awesome, thanks! If you get a chance, could you give a shot at the fractional currency threads I also posted?
For anyone curious, I sold the 1917 on Ebay last night for $57, and the 1923 for $30. So, it seems @Bradley Trotter was just about spot on!
Glad to hear it, @physics-fan3.14. Did you have any success with the fractional currency you posted as well?
