OK, clearly he's been on that $20, picture proves that... yet another omissionin the catalog apparently... (again like the 50 cent fractional, it's mentioned, but not pictured.)
Lincoln was the first actual identifiable person to appear on American coinage. WHo was the first real person to appear on American paper currency?
not franklin... think 1862 though I cant remeber his name though. But that is the first American note. If you go back further into colonial or even into the interest bearing notes .. then franklin is in the running
Lincoln in 1861, on the Demand notes from that year. Before then any Govt issued paper, like the 1815 notes etc. had eagles etc.
how about a two-part poll: which lincoln bill do you think is the most important? the same for lincoln coins?
most important? or most desireable? If its the latter, i would think the demand notes ... have you checked out the prices for those??
I personally own 3 of the LT's from 1862-3, I owned 4 at the same time and sold one off. I think when I sell all the stuff soon I have to keep one of them, just such a link with history, I mean, can you imagine either Obama or Bush being on a contemporaneously issued banknote?
Some of you may find this interesting. The Dominican Republic had a fractional note with the portrait of Lincoln on the obverse. It's a 25 centavos (cents) note issued by Banco Nacional de Santo Domingo in the year 1869. Printed by ABNC. The note catalog number is #S119. Lou
Hmm, well since apparently it would be a pretty tall order assembling a complete paper Lincoln type set... would you consider possibly just 1 each of his appearance on $5's? It's a classic denomination for him, and that alone would be a pretty big variety. Lincoln coins... the Lincoln cent definitely, most well known and the longest any one person, Lincoln or otherwise, was on a single US coin continuously (100 years and counting!). But the Lincoln comemmoratives would be a nice way to top it off. The 1918 (Illinois centennial) and 2009 (Lincoln bicentennial) are both iconic depictions of Lincoln.
Yeah I'm trying to narrow it down quite a lot because there are SOOO many different notes with him on them, and a lot of them are very expensive. I'm definitely getting a 1914 $5, a 2001 and a 2006, after that I'm just not sure which direction to go. When it comes to coins, I'm going for the 1909 VDB S if I can, as well as a 1959 and all four 2009 proofs, the 2009 silver dollar proof and unc. are (hopefully) in the mail, and I'm definitely including the 1918 Illinois commem. plus the two state quarters. There are just so many different ways to go at this, it's really quite a large undertaking. I mean I also considered after doing the bills and coins doing a world set with lincoln on world bills and coins, because I'm sure there are plenty of those out there as well. Who knows, but it's probably gonna take me quite some time. Jarrid
Actually he wasn't. There was Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabella in 1892 and 93, and if you want to ignore those because Columbus was an allogorical representation and Isabella would not have been very recognizable then you have George Washington on the Lafayette dollar in 1899. Lincoln didn't show up for another 10 years.
Don't forget to top it off with Lincoln's presidential dollar, due out next year! Sounds like a fun undertaking. Would love to see the picture after you've assembled the set.
