Do you ever go looking for a a particular coin on eBay - say you've got your eye on something special for your collection, and you WIN the auction on it - and then you notice that the seller offers combined shipping - so you click on "sellers other items" and fall down the rabbit hole? Happens to me all the time - I had my eye on an AU 1930S Standing Liberty Quarter in an ICG slab - which would be the nicest I own if I won it. Well I did win it - for a fair bit less than my max bid! (won it for $51.75, was willing to go $76) so, all high on the win, I checked other items, I mean, why not? Anything else is icing on the cake, without any real shipping costs, right? And it's a very popular eBay coin seller (MacV) so he's got tons of good stuff. Well, I'm still waiting for some auctions to finish, but I've picked up slabbed high grade Buffalo nickels (common years), Franklin Halves, quarters and a really neat Peace Dollar - and a 74 Spokane Worlds Fair souvenir with a 1908 Indian head. I am still bidding on other auctions he's got that end today. He got me good! So, in conclusion - IT'S A TRAP! DON'T CLICK ON THE OTHER ITEMS!!!!! Here's three of my newest lovelies -
Ah, the eBay seller who screwed me out of a once in a lifetime cherrypick and acted like a total jerk on the phone as he lied about why I wasn't getting the coin.
Lol... I don't have deep pockets, I use my meagre military pension to fund my coin/numismatic book addition, so my purchases are few and far between. I've been tempted many a time lol.
All the time. Even if they offer free shipping I always look the others over because why get a package with only one coin in it when there could be many!
This always happens to me, especially when dealing with $0.99 and $1.99 items. Suddenly, my cart ends up with 10+ items when all I wanted was one!
Sorry to hear that! What happened? He's got 99.9% good feedback, I will count myself lucky I haven't had any problems previously. (knock on wood) The Buffalo Nickels were between $5-10, so was a 1962 Washington quarter and a silver Missouri state quarter - less than it cost to get them graded and slabbed! The Franklin Halves were all between $15-20, in graded slabs. Not too expensive! Here's one of the Franklins ($18)
There is a thread still available on the NGC board here where I explain what happened. Note: Fun part of that thread - as I've just read through it again to refresh my memory - someone there was nice enough to send me a silver quarter, which ended up becoming a thing because I was a bit embarrassed and uncomfortable with how to respond, at which point I realized it had been a while and I hadn't responded, and became anxious about that, too, which only added to my inability at the time to find the proper response to their kind act. I'd just like to say that we did, in fact, clear the air. I thanked him for the gift (and still have the coin to this day.) I don't really post on the NGC boards so much (nor do I really post here all that much anymore, except to try to advertise selling off my collection) but if he sees this, I'd like him to know I did appreciate the act of kindness.
The main thing with that guy is pay very close attention to his pictures of raw coins. I've bought a couple coins from him with no problem but I do see some pictures where he tried to conceal blemishes. Stuff like that. But these pictures in these slabs aren't too bad
I had a couple bad experiences in the beginning. With sellers and raw coins. I ended up finding just one major online retailer on eBay I love still to this day. I only venture off once in a while and only if it's slabbed with good pictures or well circulated. By now I've learned a lot more at what to look for and at
In my youth I worked for a guy who sold stuff through a catalog he issued of specialty items. He was a very smart guy with lots of good business sense, even while not a very nice person. He used to offer a flat rate of shipping and said it worked wonders for his sales compared to when he used tiered shipping because people ordered so much more because they were trying to "get their money's worth" on the flat rate shipping. He is someone I would like to forget, but I can't help but think of him every time I find myself falling into that trap. It's hard to escape human nature!
They finally came! Nicely packaged priority mail too! The bottom one is the whole reason I got drawn in to buy the rest - the AU 1930-S Standing Liberty Quarter [drools]. I like the Buffalo Nickels and the Franklin halves are bee-ew-ti-ful! That Peace Dollar is sweeet too. I've updated my inventory and secured them in blue boxes! What a nice package to open! Hope you all are having great days too with the coins (and people and pets!) that you love!
MacV, hmmm, ya he sold me several $5-$6 dollar coins that were not cleaned and very accurately described. I’ve found his photos to be good enough, and better than most. I was forced to grade them all, made several top pops, and sold them at $300-$1,000 each till I ran out of buyers. I only had 1 issue with receiving the wrong coin. The report back was dude was in the hospital and it got mixed up. Ended up just keeping it.
